I grew up going to SCAP (Somerset County Afterschool Program). It planted the seed for me to want to provide the same resources, which led to me forming Uplift, Inc. over 25 years ago. Uplift has helped to shape the lives of thousands of students and their families. Our impact is huge and my passion and pride for its outcomes remain strong.

A FLASH BLACK MOMENT IN HISTORY: On July 14, 1885 – Sarah E. Goode born Sarah Elizabeth Jacobs was a Black American entrepreneur and inventor patented the Folding Cabinet Bed on this date in 1885.

She was the very first Black American woman to receive a United States patent. The idea for her invention came out of necessity of the times. Most people she knew lived in small homes or studios and these residents had a minimum amount of habitable space.

Many of her customers complained of not having enough room to store things much less to add furniture. Goode invented a folding cabinet bed which provided people who lived in small spaces to utilize their space efficiently. When the bed was folded up, it looked like a desk. The desk was fully functional, with spaces for storage. Patent #322,177

Elbert Frank Cox was the first known Black person to receive the Ph.D. in Mathematics in the United States.

Elbert was born in Evansville, Indiana, in December 1895. He earned the baccalaureate degree from the University of Indiana in 1917 with a major in mathematics. After serving in the US Army in France during World War I, he returned to pursue a career in teaching. Before enrolling in the graduate mathematics program at Cornell University in September 1922, he taught mathematics in the public schools in Henderson, Kentucky and later at Shaw University in Raleigh, North Carolina. In 1925 he was awarded the Doctor of Philosophy degree in mathematics from Cornell.

Isaiah Gyamfi, a 2-year old Ghanaian boy, has impressed a lot of people as he learned how to count in at least 4 languages and how to solve Math problems at such a very young age.

George T. Sampson is credited with laying the groundwork for today’s dryers. Electric clothes dryers did not exist until around 1915, and in 1938, the Hamilton Manufacturing Company built the first completely automatic drier.

The #312,388, which was Sampson’s other known sled propeller invention, was submitted in 1885 and concerned the attachment of a propelling device to a tricycle. To make it work in the snow, the wheels were replaced with runners. The propeller would be controlled by the sled’s occupants using pedals. The schematics for this and Sampson’s other patents are still on file with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

According to Patricia Carter Sluby’s book ‘The Inventive Spirit of African-Americans’, Jennings began his career as an apprentice to a well-known New York tailor. Later, in Lower Manhattan, he founded what would become a huge and profitable clothing store. When he was 29 years old, he received a patent for his “dry scouring” method of removing filth and grease from clothing. Jennings was successful in patenting a process of “Dry Scouring Clothes, and Woolen Fabrics in general, so that they preserve their original shape, and have the shine and aspect of new,” according to an article in the New York Gazette from March 13 of that year.

In 1914, Garrett Morgan invented a "safety hood." It made polluted air more breathable. The invention was an early version of the gas masks later used in World War I to protect soldiers from poison gas. Morgan's invention was famously put to use in 1916 in Cleveland, Ohio. The next time that you stop at a traffic light think of Garrett Morgan. He was granted Patent No. 1,475,074, on November 20, 1923 via the U.S. Patent Office. He was only 46 at the time. [Though Morgan’s was NOT the first traffic signal (that one had been installed in London in 1868), it was an important innovation nonetheless: By having a third position besides just “Stop” and “Go,” it regulated crossing vehicles more safely than earlier signals had.] He sold the patent rights to General Electric for $40,000, a huge sum at the time.
