Anacostia Arts Center is a home for the arts, culture, and small businesses, where the physical space is used to employ and nourish the local arts and creative economy. Within the Anacostia Art Center, community members will find our Black Box Theater, a café, and a lounge area. On our lower level, you will meet the entrepreneurs participating in our incubator program, The Hive 2.0., dedicated to

supporting and employing the local arts and creative economy. We encourage you to check out our different spaces and support your small local businesses! Established in 1987, the Washington Area Community Investment Fund’s (Wacif’s) mission is to increase equity and economic opportunity in underserved communities in the Washington, D.C. area by investing knowledge, social, and financial capital in low-and-moderate-income entrepreneurs. In December of 2021, Wacif purchased the Anacostia Art Center, with the vision of driving new investments and assistance for small businesses located in Historic Anacostia, and the greater Washington, D.C. Together, we will continue to honor and lift the Anacostia Art Center’s legacy and impact by supporting the local art economy and culture.

Convergence has closed and what a run it was!

Curated by the Anacostia Arts Center and presented at Homme Gallery, the show brought together four DC-area artists whose work captured something true about the past five years. Maeva Komenan, Nate G, Mariah Bonner, and Luis Del Valle showed up with work shaped by real life, and it showed. Homme DC gallery director Amir Browder put it perfectly:

"Coming out of COVID brought us to the age of Aquarius, and of taking nothing for granted. This exhibition was a showcase of talented artists who were able to create during that trying time and come out with amazing work."

Thank you to our partners at Homme DC and to everyone who came through. The Anacostia Arts Center is currently under renovation but we are not slowing down. More programming, more community, more moments like this one are coming. We look forward to welcoming you back when we reopen in February 2027.

Anacostia Arts Center and Homme Gallery present Convergence, a mid-summer exhibition that takes stock of the first half of a decade none of us anticipated. For Maeva Komenan, Nate G, Mariah Bonner, and Luis Del Valle, the past five years have brought the full weight of post-pandemic life: one artist navigated an ICE arrest, another crossed the stage for a master's degree. These experiences live inside the work, and Convergence is where they surface. Convergence asks what it means to keep making art when life keeps interrupting it, and what that art looks like on the other side. Each of these four artists answers differently, but with the same clarity and resilience that defines this moment.

Convergence opens with a reception at Homme Gallery on July 10 and runs through July 26. The exhibition is part of the Anacostia Arts Center's ongoing commitment to connected cultural experiences even as it undergoes renovation, activating spaces across the community, rooted in creativity, wellness, and collective care. Big news for Anacostia. 🎉

We are proud to announce that Messay Derebe has been named Executive Director of the Anacostia Arts Center, owned, operated and programmed by WACIF.

Messay has been with us through one of the most significant chapters in AAC's history. From navigating a major renovation, taking programming into the community, and never losing sight of the people this place is built for.

Now, as we prepare to reopen in February 2027 with a reimagined space and an even stronger vision, she steps into this role ready.

AAC has always been the living room of Anacostia. It’s a place where artists show their work, entrepreneurs build their businesses, and neighbors find each other. Messay understands that balance. And under her leadership, we can't wait to show you what's next.
