Some voices change the way we hear music. Others change who gets to be heard.

Legendary soprano Martina Arroyo did both….

OPERA America mourns the passing of Martina Arroyo, a legendary soprano, a tireless champion of young artists, and a beloved member of our opera family.

Born and raised in Harlem, Arroyo rose to stardom after stepping in at the last minute for Birgit Nilsson as Aida at the Metropolitan Opera in 1965. She went on to become one of the defining Verdi sopranos of her era, opening doors for Black artists on the world’s great stages. Through the Martina Arroyo Foundation, she helped emerging singers master complete operatic roles and build the skills needed for professional careers.

A 2010 NEA Opera Honors recipient and member of OPERA America’s Opera Hall of Fame, Arroyo leaves a legacy as both an extraordinary artist and a dedicated mentor.

We invite you to hear her story in her own words through our Oral History Project at operaamerica.org/OralHistoryArroyo

Music stays with us.

We loved this story about a Harlem choir using music to connect people living with Alzheimer’s and dementia with their caregivers.

It’s a beautiful reminder that music carries memory, history and connection.

"Connecting the Dots…Telling Our Story"

A new Harlem choir is bringing together people living with Alzheimer’s, along with their caregivers, through the power of music.

As Classical Music Month comes to a close, the music doesn’t.

Classical music is a journey—one shaped by generations of composers, musicians and voices, with more of the story still to be heard.

At Heritage Signature Chorale, that journey continues as we lift up the music and stories that are an essential part of the classical tradition.

And soon, we’ll continue that journey together as our 2026–2027 season begins. https://www.heritagesignaturechorale.org
