In her studio, using charcoal and oil pastels, June Canedo de Souza treats drawing as the necessary first hour. She moves from paper to paper, one drawing made within minutes of another. Presence is altered when material, body, and surface connect; many a drawing is made.

Paper is dipped into a mixture of joint compound, plaster, and water, then rolled within slabs of cardboard and set out to dry. The paper is then separated from its drying place, as residues record the conditions of their making.

✨ Applications reviewed by a panel of local arts professionals and former studio residents

Hamiltonian Artists invites applications for the newly established Hamiltonian Teaching Artist Residency. In partnership with American University, the residency provides:

• Paid graduate-level teaching appointment in the MFA Studio Art Program
• $2,000 residency honorarium
• $1,000 stipend for a public lecture and travel expenses
• Fully funded housing and studio space in Washington, DC

This residency is for practicing visual artists who are committed to artist mentorship and studio-driven pedagogy. The teaching artist will work with MFA students at American University while engaging with Hamiltonian Fellows and the broader DC arts community through professional development and public programming.

Eligibility: An MFA, or anticipated MFA completion by January 15, 2027, in Visual Arts, Studio Art, or a related creative discipline is required. Prior university-level teaching experience is not required. The selected artist must reside in the provided Washington, DC, housing for the duration of the Spring 2027 semester.

STUDIOS ✨ Applications Open Soon!

The Studios at Hamiltonian Artists support the stability and growth of artists working in the area. Ranging from 140 to 270 square feet, the five studios are located on the second floor above Hamiltonian Artists’ gallery at 14th & U Streets NW.

Studios are available to rent for 3, 6, or 12 month terms, with subsidized rental rates offered at two levels to promote greater access. Priority is given to Hamiltonian Artists alumni, DC natives, DC residents (minimum 3 years), and area-based international artists. Applications are reviewed by a panel of local arts professionals and past studio residents.

The “I’ll Meet You There” video truck is making its final stop at HEURICH HOUSE MUSEUM this Saturday! 🚚🎥

On August 15 from 2:30–3:15 PM, stop by to catch A.J. McClenon’s short film Vega Travel Run Five Hundred and Ninety Eight to Three Hundred and Fifty Six. Then, stay awhile and grab a beer at 1921 Biergarten at the Heurich House Museum ! 🍻 1921 Biergarten supports HEURICH HOUSE MUSEUM Museum’s Education and Incubator programs.

August 15 is also the final day to experience I’ll Meet You There, an exhibition featuring video works that explore what it means to inhabit spaces of uneasy familiarity—places that feel recognizable, yet quietly destabilizing. Don’t miss this final stop!
