Thank you for the powerful Mysterious Landscapes.
To our musicians, staff, and Caroline Su — who made her Capital City Symphony debut on this stage — thank you for the artistry you brought to this evening. And to everyone who filled the hall: thank you for being part of this Force of Nature season opener.

Alan Hovhaness's Symphony No. 2, Mysterious Mountain, closes Mysterious Landscapes on October 4. Composed in 1955, it's one of Hovhaness's most performed works — spacious, hymn-like, and modal in character, closer in spirit to sacred music than symphonic drama.
The composer described it as reaching "toward something higher than ourselves." Expect the evening to end not with a climax, but with expansive stillness.

Maria Grenfell's River Mountain Sky was commissioned by the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra to mark Tasmania's Bicentenary in 2004. It's the composer's musical impression of her adopted home — mist over the river estuary, sunlight dancing on the water, rushing cascades giving way to the stillness of evening skies.
Part of Mysterious Landscapes, October 4.
