Last week we attended a small memorial service to honor K9 Achilles. Canines are our passions and our handlers build these unbreakable bonds with their partners. When it is time to say goodbye, it is gut wrenching. In a small state, a handler’s canine is much more than a tool or a resource for them, they are their protector, partner, and backup. Many times handlers have to respond to dangerous calls by themselves, and knowing they have their canine with them to help ensure they go home to their loved ones creates a bond that is unlike any other. It is difficult to put into words what the loss of a canine does to the handler, their family, and the community that loved them. In the most difficult moments of end of life care, the VPCA can step in and at least take the financial burden away from the handler, who has to make the incredibly difficult decision to say goodbye to their partner. We could not do this without Lacey’s Fund. Lacey’s Fund was established to cover the medical costs for our retired teams, which would otherwise be the responsibility of the handler. Please consider a donation to Lacey’s Fund so we can ensure our handlers never have to worry about financial obligations while also having to make the most difficult choices of their lives. Currently Lacey’s Fund is supporting over 20 retired canines , so even the smallest donation will help us continue our mission.
To the Schutt Family: we are deeply saddened by the loss of Achilles and we thank you all for the sacrifice and work your handler dedicated to making sure Achilles had a stellar career. We share in your grief of having to say goodbye to one of the goodest boys.
