Today is May 25th, Memorial Day in the United States, and on this somber day, we at Scena Theatre wish to share an insightful quote from the author of our next play, Jean-Paul Sartre, from his novel Existentialism and Human Emotions, a masterclass of human psychology.

“To choose this or that is to affirm at the same time the value of what we choose, because we can never choose evil. We always choose the good, and nothing can be good for us without being good for all.”

Our next show is “No Exit” by the man himself. A riveting tale about Hell and existentialism. We hope to see you there.

Fun Fact: Today is Laurence Olivier’s birthday! Born today in 1907, he led an illustrious career. A formidable actor, Olivier was known for roles  in Wuthering Heights, Hamlet, Henry V, Spartacus, and more.

Laurence Olivier was knighted, given life peerage as Baron Olivier, given The Order of Merit, Order of Dannenbrog, The Legion of Honour, and many more awards for both his wartime efforts during World War II and his prestigious works within film.

Additionally, Baron Olivier was given the naming of the National Theatre’s largest auditorium in his honor while also being commemorated with the Laurence Olivier awards, which are bestowed annually since 1984 by the Society of London Theatre.

Olivier passed on July 11th, 1989 at the age of 82. He was cremated on July 14th and a memorial service was held in Westminster Abbey on October 20th. Baron Olivier’s ashes were given the honor of being buried within Poets’ Corner in London for his amazing works during his life.
