In our continuing series highlighting the young artistisc talent from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) 🇨🇩 in our November 2026 exhibition, we feature Shabani Bonela from Lubumbashi, DRC.

Shabani Bonela is a Congolese abstract expressionist painter who developed her practice as a self-taught artist, building a visual language shaped by personal exploration, community exchange, and a deep connection to emotion and intuition. Through movement, texture, spontaneous forms, and symbolic elements, her paintings transform inner experiences into visual expressions. Her work explores emotional well-being, everyday struggles, and human resilience, creating a space for dialogue, healing, and reflection on the complexities of the inner self.

Pre-exhibition sales available at the gallery and online (see links in bio).

Gallery Article 15 is pleased to introduce Congolese 🇨🇩 artist Jeancy Tanzey, a featured artist in Gallery Article 15’s Young Artists Collective (Collectif A15) November 2026 exhibition.

Jeancy Tanzey’s practice explores the vision of “one world, one people, one nation,” reflecting on humanity’s shared connections and the importance of unity beyond cultural and social divisions. A graduate of the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Kinshasa, DRC he creates vibrant compositions of intertwined lines, organic forms, and symbolic imagery that celebrate cultural diversity and collective harmony. His series “Les mouvements de l’univers” presents dance as a universal language, bringing together rhythms, traditions, and gestures from different cultures as expressions of connection, memory, and shared human experience.

New at Gallery Article 15: Pende Dancers.

Pende dancers from the southwestern region of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) perform at initiation ceremonies, funerals and and other important events wearing elaborate full body costumes made from raffia palm leaves. Some masks represent ancestral spirits, while others are used in ceremonies to celebrate important life events. The dancers’ masks are notable for their large, closely set eyes, reflecting the sun and a sense of all-seeing. Feathers and large red disks can be seen in some of the masks.

These beautiful small statues of Pende dancers are handmade in the DR Congo from raffia palm leaves and wood.

We are excited to share a first view of some of the works in our upcoming exhibition, Congo nde Mboka (Congo is the Homeland), a solo exhibition by Congolese artist JP Kiangu.

The exhibition showcases the DR Congo’s rich history and cultural traditions through a series of paintings imbued with color, nostalgia and humor. Kiangu’s current style of painting is known as « KIZOBAZOBA,“ which translates from the artist’s native Lingala to “the art of fooling around.” These works often include scraps of recycled traditional fabrics as well as glitter, adding additional color and texture.
