Ilana Manolson: The Air We Share

February 7 – March 29, 2026 – Katzen Arts Center at American University Museum, 4400 Massachusetts Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20016

Painter, printmaker, and naturalist Ilana Manolson presents a solo exhibition that turns our attention to the plants we overlook—the so-called weeds that thrive at the edges of human awareness. The Air We Share elevates these resilient species, revealing how they stabilize soil, retain water, and sustain the interconnected systems we all depend on.

TAW founder luminous painting “Hudson River XIV” wraps the full cover of poet new collection, Mountain Climbing a River ( , 2026).

Young’s poems delve into interrogating issues of justice through the lens of water and imagination—weaving together reflections on the middle passage, slavery, and a tribute to Elijah McClain. As Young writes, water and justice are inseparable.

Foster’s river paintings capture water not as static subject but as living force—constantly moving, reflecting, transforming. The blue currents and fluid forms become pathways for contemplation, mirroring the poems’ journey through memory, resistance, and hope.

This collaboration creates a powerful statement about water’s role as witness and participant in our struggles for justice. When we speak of water, we speak of survival, memory, and the possibility of healing.

Drawing instinctively with both hands while listening to recordings of ice melting, shifting, and breaking, Peerna transcribes sound into movement—creating intuitive chronicles of her emotional response to vanishing glaciers. Her wall sculptures serve as memorials for glaciers that no longer exist.

Through direct physical and sensory engagement with ice and sound, she transforms ephemeral environmental phenomena into visceral visual form, making visible what is disappearing from our world.

REPOST ↪️ From TAW member, Diane Burko ():

"Join us this Friday, November 21 at from 6-9 pm for a pop-up exhibition, Philadelphia Artists Resist, curated by myself and , where 18 incredible artists have submitted works that resist the rise of violence, fear, and division in America. My work emphasizes the importance of our environment, and advocates for change. The exhibition will also be open on November 22 & 23 from 12-6 pm.

Fall of Freedom is a nationwide activation of creative resistance, where galleries, artists, museums, concert halls, theaters, libraries, & comedy clubs will be hosting public programming that channel the urgency of the moment in America, where our rights & freedoms are at risk. TAW artist 💧In excerpt from our website: “I am a painter, environmental artist and arts writer. I tell stories about the devastation to the land around bodies of water and the bodies of water themselves that have been severely impacted by climate change and by the extraction of water for industrial and agricultural use, and increased human consumption. These factors have caused severe drought, growing desertification and the proliferation of sink holes around the world.”

Artist Think About Water featured artist Jaanika Peerna whose work focuses on the climate breakdown we are all surrounded with.

As we are witnessing a massive and furious melting speed of glaciers in polar regions these past decades Peerna has been looking for ways to face the facts, heal the soul as well as act an an artist in order to help slow the destruction down.

Featured artists: Robert Dawson and Ellen Manchester • Robert brings his skills as a photographer, environmentalist and writer and Ellen contributes her curatorial and environmental expertise to our collaboration. In 1990, Dawson and Manchester
founded and co-directed the Water in the West Project—a large-scale collaborative project with several other photographers including Sant Khalsa. For ten years, we met, gave each other feedback on our work, and produced books, exhibitions and symposia. The Center for Creative Photography in Tucson later acquired the archive of project photographers’ work for their permanent collection.
