Listening While Muslim: Mehfil
featuring Ronnie Malley and Tex “Tahir” Allen
Saturday Feb 15 2025
Houston

In the blessed places of the world, people seeking healing and the divine gather in spiritual circles called Mehfils. These gatherings of sohbat and good company resonate with sound, music, dance, ecstasy, and reflection.

Listening While Muslim: Mehfil comes to Houston, celebrating the robust spiritual traditions of these diverse communities. Join this sonic journey as Asad Ali Jafri (DJ Ase Wonder) and Abdul-Rehman Malik host Palestinian multi-instrumentalist Ronnie Malley and Houston jazz legend Tex ‘Tahir’ Allen.

Experience music that nourishes the heart and food that feeds the soul as we explore the power of these spiritual traditions in this moment of heartbreak and fracture.

Up Next!

Curated by Dr. Su’ad Abdul Khabeer, Umi’s Archive is truly an act of love. Drawing on the remarkable life of her mother, Amina Amatul Haqq, Dr. Su’ad hasn’t just given us a insight into one person’s experience of being Black and Muslim, but has given us access to the vibrant, transformational and radical contours of Islam as shaped, nurtured and lived by African-American Muslims and the communities that surrounded them. “Umi,” she writes, “was a creative and loving person and Umi's Archive is also a dreamspace and a labor of love - love for Umi, of course, and love for what she loved: her peoples, knowledge, justice and liberation.”

As the online exhibition draws to a close, Listening While Muslim joins Dr. Su’ad Abdul Khabeer to celebrate by listening to the music which was the soundtrack of Umi’s life and the communities to which she dedicated her life. On the anniversary of Umi’s return home (may God grant her joy everlasting), Dr. Su’ad will guide us to listen as Umi did – and be inspired. As Dr. Su’ad says, “I offer Umi's Archive as a space where we can imagine those things are possible.” Join us as we listen and imagine.
