Surly Self Portrait is one of my early narrow format paintings. It's a 2003 oil painting that makes me look like some kind of Poseidon rising from the ocean. I was a grumpy young man back then as you can see. It's a strange painting, but one whose technique I rather like.

Aquatic Gardens Sketch is the first drawing that I've put up in my gallery. This one started as a loose sketch in live at the gardens. I late worked back into it with some glazes to achieve some water color like effects. It's something different that I thought people might like.

Here's the original version of the painting I shared the reproduction of earlier. It's Piet Mondrian's Still Life with Gingerpot I. His is quite a bit more polished than mine!

Blue Pot, After Mondrian is a 2004 acrylic painting. I painted this one as a reproduction of an early Piet Mondrian painting. While Mondrian is famous for his primary color squares and black lines, he painted more figurative work earlier in his history.

The Blue Pot is a 2003 oil painting, and probably one of the last oil paintings I completed. I moved wholly to acrylics around this time because they're simpler to work with. I worked large and got myself dizzy while applying turpentine to a large canvas. I don't recommend the experience to anyone else.

Main Street is an acrylic painting from 2005. The theme of "Despite all the communication no one is communicating." is perhaps more relevant now than it was then.

I was doing all sorts of interesting things with my paintings back then, using bold lines, rich colors and using text as a visual element.The figures in this one come from my sketchbooks at the time.

Top of the Pecking Order is a painting with a story. I was out on a bike ride along the Anacostia river when I came across this male turkey. I was a bit surprised so I stopped to look at him. He watched me curiously as I snapped some photos. Things went well until I pedaled off on my bike. I suddenly heard a loud gobble and looked back to find him running after me. I sped up and rode for a moment only to find he was keeping pace. I felt like Jeff Goldblum riding in the back of the jeep in Jurassic Park. I poured on the speed to get some distance and turned around a bend. Thankfully, he went off to do turkey things. I've been told since that this is common behavior for male turkeys in the fall as they establish their pecking order. Funny birds!

Sunny Day at the Lincoln Memorial captures the light as it shines one of the most famous monuments in America.

One thing I've always appreciated about DC is that different parts of town have distinct color palettes. This painting shows the distinct tans, blues, and greens of the National Mall.
