City artists each depict facets of their city in their own way, revealing what made them urban dwellers. From skyline, to river view, and from serendipitous street corner meetings, and views of tenements, printmakers show us what captures their imagination.

Jacques Villon: "Londres d'après Luce". Color aquatint, 1929. (Armstrong Fine Art)
Martin Lewis: "Chance Meeting". Drypoint, 1940-41. (Conrad R. Graeber Fine Art)

It's easy to overlook how many great abstract artists have chosen printmaking as their primary form of expression. Here's a few older examples and one recent one. Three of these printmakers are women artists; and three of them are Asian. Each of these artists, in their own way, were blazing new artistic trails.

Anju CHAUDHURI: “Paysage au Cercle (Printemps)”. Simultaneous color printing intaglio. (Armstrong Fine Art)

Seiko TACHIBANA: “Cosmos- Scene A – 11”, 2022. Etching, aquatint, monotype. (Tolman Collection of New York)

Sue FULLER: "Clown", 1945. Intaglio with stencil, 8 x 6 inches. (Susan Teller Gallery)

Kochiro ONCHI: "Poem no. 2: of the Sea", 1937. Wood engraving, woodcut. (Verne Collection)

Hiroki Morinoue, a Hawaii-born artist, has dedicated his career to refining his personal artistic vocabulary, and his prints are a colorful and abstracted vision of nature. Morinoue studied sumi brush painting and woodblock printing in Japan from 1976 through 1982 with Koh Ito Sensei and Takashi Okubo Sensei, respectively. He opened a gallery with his spouse, Setsuko Watanabe Morinoue, named Studio 7 Fine Arts in 1979. His prints reflect water and sand, as well as abstracted horizons and shells. Moreover, he depicts a reflection of our consumption's influence on nature, such as the Brazilian rainforest and its trees. Morinoue's graphic works have a painterly effect due to his carved lines.
