These pieces started with a speckled clay body, then I painted one section with underglaze and began carving the designs by hand using a technique called sgraffito, which is basically scratching through the surface to reveal the clay underneath.
The designs themselves were inspired by traditional Balkan tattoo patterns, something I’ve been exploring and translating into my pottery. I love the idea of taking these old symbols and giving them a completely different look and life on clay.
A little peek at the process before these head into the kiln. Can’t wait to see them finished…and even more excited to bring them to the museum on Wednesday!
