We're celebrating Mother's Day 2024 with a nod to the woman who was essential to Van Gogh's success, his mother Anna Carbentus Van Gogh.

A casual artist in her own right, Anna liked to paint (especially watercolor) and even gave Vincent drawing lessons during his youth!

The painting featured in this post, Portrait of the Artist's Mother, is actually based-upon a black-and-white photo of Vincent's mother he received from his sister Wilhelmina. Vincent discussed the painting in a letter to Theo, writing, "I am doing a portrait of Mother for myself. I cannot stand the colorless photograph, and I am trying to do one in a harmony of color, as I see her in my memory."

Happy birthday, Vincent! Van Gogh would be turning 171 today, how do you think he would have liked to celebrate?

We're so thankful for Vincent and his incredible contributions to art - the deep meaning of his work is a constant source of inspiration and his masterpieces color our world to this day 💛

"Thank you for your good wishes on my birthday. As it happened, I had a very pleasant day, because just then I had an excellent model for a digger." Vincent in a letter to Theo, 1883.

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day!

Vincent went through periods of hardship in his life where he had to heavily on the kindness of others, like asking his brother for financial assistance or seeking treatment for his mental health.

But there were also times when he came through for someone in need - did you know he helped support his close friend (some would say girlfriend) Sien Hoornik and her children while they were struggling to make ends meet?

Take a few moments today to do something kind for someone, whether it be it a friend, neighbor, or even a stranger 🌻

Happy Valentine's Day! Vincent isn't known for his love life, but he was a romantic at heart 💛

"Then I thought to myself, I'd like to be with a woman, I can't live without love, without a woman. I wouldn't care a fig for life if there wasn't something infinite, something deep, something real."
Vincent in a letter to Theo, 1881.
