In 1987, 18-year-old Michelle Schofield vanished in Florida.

Three days later, her body was found floating in a canal in Bone Valley. Her violent husband Leo was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison.

But there was a problem. No physical evidence linked Leo to the crime. The fingerprints inside Michelle’s abandoned car belonged to someone else entirely.

Still, Leo Schofield remained behind bars for decades.

This is one of the most controversial wrongful conviction cases in modern American history, and the subject of the award-winning podcast Bone Valley.

🚨 BREAKING NEWS 🚨 South Carolina’s supreme court has overturned the 2023 murder convictions of Alex Murdaugh, a disgraced lawyer who was convicted of the double murder of his wife, Margret, and son, Paul who were shot on the family hunting estate.

On Wednesday, the state’s supreme court ordered a new trial for Alex Murdaugh, who has been serving two life sentences for the June 2021 murders. He is also serving two additional 27 and 40 years sentences for state and federal finance crimes.

In a 5-0 ruling, the court said Murdaugh deserved a new trial because the local county clerk had unfairly biased a jury against him.

In a statement, Attorney General Alan Wilson said his office would ‘aggressively seek to retry Alex Murdaugh for the murders of Maggie and Paul as soon as possible’.

A new trial date is yet to be set.

On Monday 20th April 2026, US singer D4vd was charged with the murder of 14-year-old Celeste Rivas Hernandez.

The 21-year-old musician, whose legal name is David Burke, faces first-degree murder and additional charges, including lewd acts with a minor under the age of 14 and mutilation of a body, that could lead to life without parole or the death penalty.

In September 2025, Rivas Hernandez’s body was discovered in Burke’s abandoned Tesla in Los Angeles, after being missing since February 2024.

D4vd gained popularity among Gen Z after going viral on TikTok with the song Romantic Homicide. His singles have also featured on hit shows such as Invincible and Arcane.

Burke has pleaded not guilty.
