Draw Every Day for 100 Days

A mentor once told me to draw every day for 5 minutes. I didn’t do it then or since, but I’m now committing to draw every day for 100 days, to show up and draw something. I’m beginning in a dedicated concertina sketchbook and have set up drawing stations throughout my home, in my handbag, and in my car.
Daily drawing is a good companion to the online drawing course I’m taking from , the abstracted landscape.
I’m not new to drawing, which I feel is foundational to a well rounded art practice, having drawn with Portland Urban Sketchers for years, as well as anytime I’m out an about, but 100 days in a row? No. I want to build my skills and confidence and this commitment is a good way to accomplish my goals.
I don’t intend to post daily, but every week or 10 days I’ll show you what I’ve been doing.

Watercolor Desk Box inspired by

I’ve long admired Rae’s big desk box filled with dozens of watercolors, so I went hunting for my own box and found it yesterday at Michael’s, along with cork tiles which I cut down to fill the bottom of the box. A few measurements, some swipes with a box cutter, and I have my own box. It’s half the size but will suit my practice. My box is 12” x 3” and 2” high. It holds 51 half pans.
Long ago I ordered a couple of packs of half pans to fit into various paintbox’s so I gathered those as well as some lonely pans that have been rejected from other boxes. Now I’ll decide which colors to put in this new desk box and spend a pleasant day filling all those white pans. The box and the cork cost me just over $20. It’s not as beautiful as that gorgeous antique box with a sliding lid, but I know that I’ll enjoy it ever so much.

The question of the day is... shall I commit to the 100 Day Project (a global art project that happens annually) and if so, what can I stick to doing for 100 days? For me it'll involve paint and/or paper, something simple that I can do in 15-30 minutes, something complicated enough to keep me interested. Whew. Will you join in? It could be visual art, music, ceramics, poetry or prose, embroidery, sewing, the list goes on. For ideas go to https://www.the100dayproject.org/about?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email

Spilt Milk on Granma’s Quilt… Oops. Sometimes breakfast in bed isn’t such a good idea. Way back when lots of quilts came through my sewing machine. Now the only quilts I make are paintings of memories. The stitching took way longer than the painting but my patience for the process isn’t what it once was. This acrylic painting is 30” square, on canvas, and available. DM me if you want more details. It’s $500.
And one of many paintings on show this weekend during the Washington County Open Studios Tour. The collection of work hangs in the barn behind my home, along with work by Harley Talkington and Sheila Chugani-Baumgarden. Come see us, rain or shine. https://www.washcoart.org/map/

TOURING OPEN ART STUDIOS

Similar to a Tour of Homes, Open Art Studio Tours are free, and visitors are welcome to browse the artist’s private work space, ask questions, watch a demonstration, and maybe buy some art for your home at direct-to-you prices.
Load your car with friends and plan a day touring local studios. Maps are available online, at local libraries, and local art shops and galleries. Or ask an artist for one.
Be prepared to buy by measuring and photographing an empty wall. Slip a tape measure into your pocket. You never know what you’ll find.

My studio will be open on October 18-19, 2025, from 10-5. Address in comments. You are welcome; art is discounted up to 30%. Light refreshments, demonstrations, and try your hand at a take-home collage.

Washington County Open Art Studios
October 18-19 2025. Studio #48

It’s rare that people are invited to enter an artist’s inner sanctum, and when I get a chance, I jump on it. I’ve enjoyed visiting many art studios in the Portland area, and this year I’m opening my own art studio to the public. Pastel artist Harley Talkington is exhibiting with me. Come see us on October 18 or 19, between 10 and five. Paintings, prints, puzzles, and cards are available, some at deep discounts.
Fill your car with friends and plan to visit several art studios in Washington county. Maps are available at libraries, art stores, and galleries. Link to an online map in in comments, and I have a printed map to give you. Studio #48
My 6” collage above is available, $125 minus 30%. DM me to grab it.

All summer, I’ve struggled to find my way into painting flowers. My yard and my daughter’s garden are bursting with color, inviting me to paint. I don’t want to copy nature - cameras do that quite well. I want to respond to the way I feel about what I see. Slowly, I’m learning to loosen up, let go of control, and invite the playful child in. Maybe the key is bigger paper… or a smaller ego.

I’m a bit obsessed with drawing and painting flowers this summer, and have filled my front yard with flowers. I love the strange lines that result from blind concourse drawing and the possibilities of adding them to collage paintings.
These three on my desk are called Andrew Charles and are my personal favorites with that bold golden yellow color and frilly structure.
So now the drawing is done and I need to find something to corral the plant.

This first painting is mine, Outside the Rose Garden, done on 16x20” canvas. As I was playing with a variety of green acrylic paint I imagined a green hedge with a single rose peeking through. That led to my memories of the huge curtain hedges around the “stage” at Portland’s Washington Park amphitheater next to the International Rose Test Garden, and I imagined a pink climbing rose escaping through the hedge. So I painted it. I know, lots of memory and imagination at work, but that’s what I do.
Available. 470.
