The October Exhibit at the Amity Gallery, “I am what I see” showcases the photography of Bernie Carneol.

From the Artist:

I photograph in order to understand what I am attracted to and what influences my understanding of who I am. Photography is an act of self discovery.

My main interest is the life on the streets of cities, mainly New York, and the cities I visited in Europe and the United States. Photographing political demonstrations also interest me.

When I moved to Warwick, New York, I photographed the woods, meadows, and apple orchards. The challenge for me was to photograph nature and not just make pretty pictures, but to try to capture in an honest and direct way how the landscape affected me.

I was a special education teacher for 23 years and for the last 18 of those years, I taught English, history and photography to high school students. I had a dark room built at the school and was able to teach the complete process of black-and-white photography.

Through photography I communicate to others what I find meaningful. Perhaps it could influence their way of looking at the world.

For this performance at Amity Art Gallery, Marji (voice & guitar) will be joined by two longtime musical friends and collaborators, Jim Kunkel on guitar and Mike LaRocco on percussion, for an evening of songs chosen for their beauty, humanity, and the stories they tell.

Surrounded by the evocative artwork on the walls, they’ll share songs by writers whose music has become part of Marji’s musical landscape—including Jim, E.C. Lorick, Don Sparks, and Michael Fracasso—as well as some carefully chosen favorites by other writers they love.

Amity Art Gallery has been a meaningful musical home for Marji over the years, so she’s especially happy to bring another part of her musical life into this creative space. Several women from Marji’s Friday music gatherings—affectionately dubbed “Magical Fridays”—will return to the Gallery for a few songs (they last performed here in April 2025). You’ll hear exactly why these weekly gatherings are so magical.

That’s the vision for the evening: good songs, good listening, and lovely connection.

Artist's Reception - Saturday September 5 - 5-7 pm

The September Exhibit at the Amity Gallery, “A Craftsman’s Retrospective" This exhibit showcases the work of Jacques Hemsi, a local artist and member of the Chardavogne group. He has been making and selling his Jewelry for over 55 years. The exhibit will show all the many steps involved in the creation of making a new piece of jewelry including the casting process he taught himself in order to reproduce each piece. Also shown will be the process of designing and constructing a piece in silver, then making a mold, and setting gems all the way to a finished piece.

For this show, Jacques Hemsi selected a few pieces representing different periods of creativity, from over his 850 jewelry designs. His approach to making jewelry has been influenced by the sensitivity resulting from his spiritual quest. His original designs have been well-known at prestigious juried craft fairs since 1976 and a number of craft shops around the country.
