Can you help us find Mary Lloyd Carpenter, or the name of this school?

In 2016 Midwest Lost History did our first big trip to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, while there we stumbled upon this school that had been seemingly abandoned, with bags of apples long having rotten left on the steps, money still left behind in the bin, and a table of free books, damaged from rain and other elements. The school was eerie as most places we visit are, but it wasn't on our list of stops so we didn't stay long and didn't get many pictures. We rumaged through the old books and took a few with us that could be salvaged. Upon returning home, I found this little poem/"curse" in the front of this book. It reads:

"Steal not this book my honest friend, for fear the gallows will be thy end.
And if you do, the lord will say 'Where is that book you stole away?' and if you say you do not know, the lord will cast you down below. And if you say you do not care the devil will pull-out all your hair.
So please return to M.L. Carpenter Locker -31 Room - 111."

Further inspection of the book I found the little Detroit Times Home Institute card that reads "Mary-Lloyd Carpenter 1438 Iroquois Ave, Detroit MI". Detroit is a far ways away from this school.

We would love to return this book to Mary if she is still alive, but unfortuantely we haven't been able to find Mary. Can you help us find Mary-Lloyd Carpenter? We would also love any info on the history of the school in question. It is located in the Village of Garden, on the Garden Peninsula in Upper MI, on State Rd. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Mount Wood Castle and Cemetery; Wheeling, West Virginia.

Also known as Harness Hill Castle, the property it sits on was purchased by Dr. Andrew J. Harness from the city of Wheeling on July 13, 1921, for the sum of $10. Whatever construction that took place on the castle would have occurred between 1921 and 1925.

The building project, an attempt to build a dream home for his wife, with the most beautiful view in Wheeling, came to a very abrupt halt in 1925. The reason for it? Dr. Harness was indicted for two federal counts of illegal drug sales, one for morphine and the other for co***ne. The two counts cited in the indictment took place on Feb. 24,1919, and June 21, 1925.

A mere five days after his indictment, on Nov. 5, 1925, Dr. Harness pleaded guilty and was sentenced by Federal Judge W.E. Baker to serve 18 months in the federal penitentiary in Atlanta. He was released on Jan. 16, 1927, and from there vanishes from local history, leaving the unfinished castle as the only thing to remain.

Established in 1831, Mount Wood Cemetery is a historic burial ground for many men and women who helped develop the city into a destination for westward travelers, immigrants, and industrialists looking to capitalize on the commerce taking place here more than 100 years ago. It contains a collection of locally significant examples of antebellum, Victorian-era, and early to mid-20th century funerary art.

Idlewild, Michigan
IG/Tiktok:

Idlewild was founded in 1912 as a resort for the growing population of upper and middle class African Americans. Idlewild was a popular getaway for prominent members of the 1920's African American communities of the Midwest. By the 1950's Idlewild was nicknamed "Black Eden" for the more than 25,000 African Americans who traveled from Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and Indianapolis to enjoy vacationing there each summer and to visit its gorgeous lakes and Michigan wilderness for stimulation, partying, and a sense of community. Idlewild boasted several nightclubs known to host the best Black entertainers of the day, including Jackie Wilson, T-Bone Walker, and Motown stars like the Four Tops. Beyond just entertainment, this gave opportunity for people to interact with the stars in a way that wasn't possible in places like Detroit. By the mid 1960's however, Idlewild saw the start of a 3 decade long economic and social decline brought on by the desegregation of previously all-white resorts by the Civil Rights Act of 1964, leading to the large scale abandonment of the once booming resort.

Over the last couple decades, Idlewild has made great efforts in revitalizing itself, these efforts include identifying 35 historic structures along with recognizing the homes of Joe Louis and Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, America’s first open-heart surgeon. The semi-ghost town is still occupied by a few year round residents who are knowledgeable and proud of Idlewild's history.
