Mission Statement:
We are dedicated to the mission of providing and maintaining, through donations and volunteer efforts, an area for the year round recreational use by families, youth groups, and the public at large. WSR&R is located on the, now privately owned, former Wannaska Elementary School grounds.
A campaign to preserve the rich history of the school's sporting activities through donated photo's, dating back to the 1950's, school hockey jerseys, and so on, has been a huge success. Donated items are given for display in the, modernized, ice rink warming house. The, original, 1903 schoolhouse has been returned, restored and made available to the public as a, usable, living museum. The old school grounds also has available an equipped, updated playground, a softball field, and room for picnic areas. This area will be able to support family activities, reunions, and so much more, in a park like setting. Fundraising activities for operating costs, improvements and equipment can be held there as well. By keeping this area available to all, the historic background will be preserved, shared, and carried on for generations. So many small rural towns are disappearing, and right along with that goes the local history. We are committed to preserving a venue for all to enjoy, that is steeped in local history. Visit us on our page, Wannaska School Rink & Rec, for a more detailed look at all the improvements and old photos. Wannaska School Rink & Rec holds a long term lease for the portion of the former Wannaska Elementary School property consisting of the ice rink, playground, and ball field area, at a cost of $1.00 per year and the land taxes assessed on that portion of property.
