DJ transitions that make sense, part 2.

“Hollaback Girl” by Gwen Stefani into “The Way I Are” by Timbo the King .

Two 2000s classics with instantly recognizable sounds that make this transition between them just feel right. Good DJing isn’t always about making a transition complicated. Sometimes it’s about finding two songs that naturally belong next to each other and keeping the energy moving.

This one was from a wedding at the Sunset Pavilion at the Owl’s Nest Resort in New Hampshire.

Do I take requests at weddings? Sure. But timing is everything.

This guest wanted Nelly, and about 10 minutes later I found the right moment to mix “Hot In Herre” over “Yeah!” by Usher. The second the guest realized what was happening, his reaction said it all.

I love a good request when it fits the couple’s vibe and adds value to the dance floor. It’s even better when it was something I was already planning on playing! That lets me know I am getting a good read on the crowd!

In this scenario the song request checked all those boxes, so we made it happen.

Free Bird at a wedding? With the right crowd and the right moment, absolutely!

I dropped an uptempo house remix of Free Bird at this wedding at the West Dennis Yacht Club and these guys were locked in. They crowded around the DJ booth, watched the mix happen, and absolutely lost it on the drop.

Sometimes DJing is just reading the room, feeding off the crowd’s energy, and knowing when you can get away with something unexpected.
