FAQs - The Annual Summer Musical

• Auditions - First thing to know is everyone who auditions and would like to participate in the town-wide musical can. We do not eliminate from auditions. Do you need to prepare a song? If you can, that is great. If not, and many new-to-the-theatre do not - we will simply ask you to sing Happy Birthday. Our staff, myself included, have years of audition experience in both professional and amateur/community circles. Our goal is to provide as painless an experience for participants as possible.

• The rehearsal schedule varies depending on the age of the actor and the role the participant will be playing. The Children's division is ages entering K to fifth grade. They begin rehearsing on Tuesday evenings at the park and rec from 6:30 - 7:30. As we get closer to the performances, we begin to include them in the overall rehearsals, usually adding one evening (typically Thursday). We are always mindful of the ages of the children and dismiss them earlier than the rest of the cast. If a child is cast as a lead or secondary role, that child would have more frequent rehearsals as needed. We try to work with the parent in this case to schedule them as able. When we get to three weeks before opening, the rehearsals for everyone increase so that both the actor and the production are ready for the performances. We do not do late night rehearsals.

• We also have Youth and Adult divisions, and their rehearsal schedules are more frequent than the Children's division. All rehearsals are held at the Park and Rec department until two weeks before opening. We then move to Lyman Hall High School auditorium for the remainder of rehearsals.

• All roles are cast with age-appropriate actors. Adults play adult roles, youth play youth roles, children play child roles.

• We typically have anywhere from 60 to 100 children enrolled in the Children's division each summer. It varies and can be as low as 45 or 50 and as much as 150 children (we had A LOT of Oompah Loompas in W***y Wonka and 80 penguins in Mary Poppins lol).

• There are other events during the year that members of the WCT can participate in. We co-sponsor two wonderful town events in Wallingford each year. In October we work with the Park and Rec Department and the Wallingford Celebrations committee to bring the annual Halloween Parade and Block Party to the folks of Wallingford. We typically provide several characters from various movies and shows to greet and mingle in the crowd. These actors are typically teens and adults, but we do have children participate with a couple of parent-chaperones as they wave from porches along the parade route.

• The second event we work with Park and Rec, and the Celebrations Committee is the annual Seasons of Celebration for the Holiday season in Wallingford. We primarily work with the Tree Lighting event by providing a large chorus of singers sharing holidays songs and performances, as well as provide several well-known characters to walk the crowd and greet the public ( The Grinch, Cindy-Lou Who, Dorothy and the characters from Oz, etc.) Both events are open to participation from folks of all ages who want to join in the fun.

• There is no cost to audition for the show. However, if you decide to join us, we do ask a $150 annual membership fee. The membership fee supports the work of the WCT during the year. This is typically paid before the summer show rehearsals begin. If a family is unable to pay this amount, we will provide a scholarship for that person to take part. All information is kept strictly confidential. It has always been our mission and goal to provide wholesome entertainment to the public and offer the opportunity to participate in the arts to all, regardless of ability to pay. We also do offer family rates to those who have more than one participant.

• The WCT is run on volunteers. Every one of us is a volunteer. We do this for two reasons: We love Wallingford, and we want to bring and support the arts in Wallingford. We have been blessed to have certified, highly qualified individuals on our staff: degreed and/or certified in their prospective fields - all of us with the desire to bring this opportunity to the people of Wallingford.

• I have a simple philosophy: The arts are here for everyone. They bring immeasurable good to all our lives. The arts help us grow as individuals and as a community. It is our hope that we can provide not only fun and entertainment, but a place to discover the gifts each one of us has within.

Enjoy the photos below from shows past. W***y Wonka, Peter Pan, Mary Poppins respectively.
