But you should know three things:

• What you want it to represent
• Where you want it
• How big you want it to feel

It honestly disgusts me when a grown adult says, “I have to get permission from my husband/wife to get this tattoo.”

Permission? You are still your own person. Marriage or a relationship does not give someone ownership over your body.

Now, should couples communicate? Absolutely. If a large tattoo affects shared money, plans, or responsibilities, have that conversation. Respect your partner’s opinion—but there is a massive difference between discussing a decision and needing permission to make it.

A healthy relationship should be two people supporting each other, not one person controlling what the other can do with their own body. Your partner doesn’t have to love every tattoo you choose, but they should still respect that the final decision belongs to you.

Love should never cost you your individuality.
