Ellen Mote is a Multidisiplarinary Artist based in Waco, Texas.

Ellen Mote occupies an interesting space between artist, writer, and creative thinker: she makes art, but she also thinks deeply about how we make things, why we make them, and what it means to build a creative life while being a whole person with other responsibilities.

Mote explores the theme of being held through acts of care and ancestral identity. Utilizing cyanotypes, sculpture, light, and repetitive abstract forms on unprimed canvas, Mote conveys the deeply rooted ways we give and receive care.

Meet the artists of Being Held.

Ellen Mote is one of three Texas-based artists featured in our upcoming exhibition alongside Naomi Canale and Spencer Welch.

These photographs from our 2026 Spring Break Camp feel especially meaningful today.

Among the artists our campers discovered this year was Yayoi Kusama, an artist whose extraordinary imagination and singular visual language inspired generations around the world.

As we reflect on her passing and the loss of other creative and cultural trailblazers, we’re reminded why introducing young people to art matters so deeply.

In our classrooms and galleries, children encounter artists of the past and present. They learn their stories, stand before their work, ask questions, experiment with their ideas, and begin discovering creative voices of their own.

The artists may leave us, but what they created remains, waiting for another person, another student, another generation to encounter it.

We remember. We learn. We create. We carry it forward.

Spencer Welch is an interdisciplinary artist seeking to represent and understand the mundane moments of ordinary life. She interprets her own story of motherhood through oil paint and other mediums, unafraid to explore technique and texture within the boundary of creativity. Spencer believes that the purpose of her work is to find connection with herself and God and hopes that her paintings express this very personal and yet universal experience; what it means to be human.

Meet the artists of Being Held.

Spencer Welch is one of three Texas-based artists featured in our upcoming exhibition alongside Naomi Canale and Ellen Mote.
