A heartfelt thank you to Dr. Jenny Bent from Sonoma State University for spending time with VCC and Voces Lumine Tuesday night! 💙

We’re incredibly grateful for the powerful insights she shared with us—and excited to put them into practice as we prepare to perform Dona Nobis Pacem.

Some memorable reminders from the evening:
✨ “Breathe while thinking of the most beautiful sound you could create.”
✨ “Be a singing actor.”
✨ “Stay in it, even when you are not actively singing.”

And her thoughtful, practical attention to articulation has already changed the way we approach this piece for the better.

We can’t wait to bring all of these insights to the stage. Thank you, Dr. Bent, for helping us find even more depth, intention, and expression in our singing! 🎶

🎧 Listening Notes: Dona Nobis Pacem 2

One of the fascinating things about Dona Nobis Pacem is the way Vaughan Williams brings together very different voices.

The text comes from several sources: the Latin Mass, Walt Whitman’s poetry, biblical passages and the words of British politician John Bright. Instead of feeling like separate pieces, Vaughan Williams weaves them into one dramatic musical journey.

Listen for the way the chorus, soloists and orchestra interact — sometimes separately, sometimes together, and sometimes almost in conversation.
The more you listen, the more you’ll hear.

Tuesday rehearsals are better with snacks! 🍪💛 A huge thank you to Nancy and Nez for keeping our choir fueled with a delicious Snack Tuesday spread! 😋

And, of course, no rehearsal is complete without a little silliness. This week’s warm-up came with one very important declaration:

🎶 “I WILL LISTEN TO JOHN!” 🎶

We sing together, we snack together, and… we make promises to John together. 😂

Today, we’re taking a moment to celebrate and appreciate our incredible Artistic Director, John Sorber! 🎶❤️

John’s love for music is matched only by his love for the people around him. He’s a teacher, mentor, husband, father, and certified goofball—and his unwavering dedication to excellence continues to lift both VCC and COS choirs to new heights.

Because of John, VCC is more than a choir. It’s a community of 150+ members where people feel valued, welcomed, challenged, and inspired. His passion and leadership have shaped countless musical experiences, both onstage and off.

Thank you, John, for always being the first one in the room with a smile, for making people feel seen, and for reminding us how joyful it is to make music together. We’re grateful to sing for you and follow your direction!

Thank you for all you do, John! 👏🎵

🎻 This is going to be BIG.

For our November 6 performance of Dona Nobis Pacem, VCC will be joined by the largest accompanying orchestra we’ve ever brought to the stage.

Add more than 150 singers, the COS Concert Choir and Chamber Singers, featured soloists and Voces Lumine — and you’ve got a concert unlike anything VCC has presented before.

The sound. The scale. The music.

We can’t wait for you to hear it.
