What belongs to a composer, and what belongs to the state around him?

Dmitri Shostakovich wrote his Festive Overture in 1954, and it is exactly what the title promises, brilliant, ceremonial, instantly exhilarating. Its opening fanfare and racing themes have opened concerts ever since.

The life behind it was more complicated. Shostakovich worked under a Soviet state that alternately celebrated him, censured him, and frightened him, and he learned early how much of himself could be said out loud. The Festive Overture is not a confession. It is a composer at the height of his craft, writing in public.

That history makes people want to sort him, to decide which side of it he belonged to. He belongs to neither. A government can commission an artist, honor an artist, or silence an artist, but it cannot make the work its own.

What he left behind is played this October in Virginia Beach, as it is played in concert halls around the world, by musicians whose countries, languages, and politics have little in common. That reach is the point. Music this alive is not anyone's property and not anyone's argument. It is simply shared.

T O G E T H E R A G A I N ! Last night at rehearsal, we had a special guest who we haven't seen in almost 20 years! Renae Adrian was our former Principal Trumpet and played alongside our current Principal Trumpet, Robyn Card. Their last time together was 2009. Last night Renae joined us again as a sub, sitting alongside Robyn and also Megan Hutera, as they fanfared their way through Festive Overture by Shostakovich! It was a great sound but more importantly, a great feeling to remember what makes our Symphonicity family special and enduring. 💛
