Before Spain arrived. Before America rewrote the textbooks. Filipinos were already dancing. 🌾🎋

The tinikling is one of the oldest folk dances in the Philippine archipelago, believed to have originated in Leyte among the Visayan people. Its name comes from the tikling bird, a graceful rail bird that hops and weaves between the reeds and bamboo stalks of the Philippine lowlands. Dancers mimic that bird's quick, elegant footwork between two clapping bamboo poles, a tradition that predates colonization and survived every attempt to replace Filipino culture with something foreign.

Some historians believe the dance also carries a deeper origin: Filipino laborers under Spanish colonial rule would hop between bamboo poles to avoid punishment from overseers. Whether legend or history, the tinikling became a symbol of Filipino agility, resilience, and refusal to be broken. It is now the national folk dance of the Philippines. 🇵🇭 Did you grow up watching or performing the tinikling? Drop a 🎋 in the comments and tell us where your family is from.

The Philippine Coast Guard flagship BRP Teresa Magbanua held position at Escoda Shoal for five months in 2024 as Chinese vessels rammed it, blocked resupply ships, and fired water cannons at Filipino fishermen in the area.
The crew ran out of drinking water. Some required medical evacuation. The Philippine government confirmed the ship was forced to withdraw in September 2024 after Chinese vessels made resupply impossible.
A 2016 international tribunal ruled China's claim to these waters has no legal basis. China ignored it. These are Philippine waters. These are Filipino fishermen. This is happening now.

Before Spain ever planted a cross in Aklan, the Ati people were already dancing. 🖤🤍🇵🇭

The Ati-Atihan festival is one of the oldest celebrations in the Philippine archipelago, rooted in the ancient Ati people of Panay, the indigenous inhabitants who welcomed the Ten Datus of Borneo centuries before any colonizer arrived. When Spain came, they did what they always did: they baptized it, renamed it, and layered the Santo Niño over a tradition that was never theirs to claim. But the Ati never stopped dancing. The black soot on the faces, the drumbeats that shake the ground, the chants that rise above the noise: none of that came from Spain. That came from a people who were here first.

Most Filipinos celebrate Ati-Atihan without knowing whose memory they are honoring. The Ati people, the original Negritos of Panay, were pushed to the mountains and the margins while their festival became a tourist spectacle. The dance survived. The people who started it were nearly erased. 💔

Did you know the Ati-Atihan predates Spanish colonization by centuries? Drop a 🖤 if you're celebrating the Ati people today, not just the festival. Share this so the real history gets told.

Before Spain. Before America. Before anyone called it the Philippines.
The Rajahnate of Butuan in what is now Caraga, Mindanao, was sending diplomatic missions to the Chinese imperial court as early as 1001 AD. Its rulers traded gold, wax, and forest goods. Its people sailed balangay vessels that have since been carbon-dated to 320 AD — the oldest watercraft ever excavated in Southeast Asia.
Filipino civilization did not begin with colonization. It was interrupted by it. Follow Philippines Raw — culture that never needs an apology.
