Congratulations to our most recent solo artist, Mike Lane- pictured here with a few of his NEW collectors! Exciting news 🌟 while Mikes show is coming to a close— we welcome Blue Heron Chapter of the Sumi-e Society of America where Mike serves on the Board of Directors. Sumi-e by Mike Lane

Blue Heron is a Hampton Roads-based non-profit organization founded in 1988 that fosters an appreciation for East Asian brush painting through workshops, lectures, and exhibitions.

This Friday, September 18, is the opening reception of ‘Autumn Light’ a group exhibition of 21 of Blue Heron’s members.

THE MIGHTY MINIS Artist Application closes Monday, September 14 at MIDNIGHT!

Why apply? Mighty Minis brings together emerging and established artists for one of our favorite exhibitions of the year—celebrating original artwork on an approachable 8×8 scale and making collecting original art more accessible to our community. Each selected artist will create three original works, with every piece priced at $125.

✨ 80 artists will be selected. May the odds be ever in your favor.

APPLICATION DEADLINE → September 14 at midnight
ARTIST NOTIFICATIONS → September 20
OPENING NIGHT → November 21

Betwixt & Between: Liminal Perspectives explores threshold spaces - the quiet, transitional moments where one state becomes another. Through traditional Asian watercolor techniques applied to East Coast landscapes, Mike Lane captures marshes, creek eddies, dunes meeting the sea, and seasonal shifts.

These liminal environments invite stillness and reflection. Subtle brushwork and balanced composition reveal harmony, complementarity, and the generative tension present in moments of change. Lane's work encourages viewers to pause, observe, and consider the beauty found within transition.

AUTUMN LIGHT
A Group Exhibition by the Blue Heron Chapter of the Sumi-e Society of America
On View: September 16–27

Rooted in the expressive tradition of East Asian brush painting, Autumn Light brings together works inspired by nature, atmosphere, and the changing light of the season. Through expressive brushwork, tonal variation, and intentional composition, the exhibition invites us to slow down, look closely, and notice the quiet transitions happening around us.
The Hampton Roads–based Blue Heron Chapter is dedicated to fostering an appreciation for East Asian brush painting while creating a cultural bridge between East and West through art, education, and community.

Join us Friday evening for a special demonstration followed by our Opening Reception:

🎨 Sumi-e Demonstration | 5 PM
Arrive early for a one-hour demonstration with Norene Spencer, who will share the art of Sumi-e brush painting while creating a seasonal fall pumpkin.

CALLING ALL ARTISTS - there’s still time to apply for Mighty Minis!

Mighty Minis is our highly anticipated juried exhibition bringing together emerging and established artists. Selected artists will create three original 8″ × 8″ gallery-wrapped artworks exclusively for the exhibition. All artwork will be priced at $125 per piece.

You do not need to have your Mighty Minis artwork completed to apply. Simply submit examples of your recent work so our jury can get to know your artistic style.

Application deadline: Monday, September 14, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.

Artist notifications: Sunday, September 20

Artwork delivery: November 12–14

Opening reception: Saturday, November 21, from 6:30–9:30 p.m.
Artists must be 18 or older. A $30 non-refundable application fee is required.
