Our animal ambassadors were fascinated with the beautiful Pride enrichments their caretakers made for them this month! In both our communities and the natural world, diversity helps to keep ecosystems thriving, and our team celebrates the beauty of this diversity all throughout June and year-round. Happy Pride to all! ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜🩷🤎🖤🤍🩶

Look who's excited for World Crocodile Day! 🐊 🐊 There are 26 species of crocodilians in the world, a group which includes true crocodiles, alligators, caimans, gharials, and, of course, Tomistoma like our own Ralf and Sommer. There is far less scientific research available for Tomistoma than other crocodilians, but fortunately, our team helps to support this endangered species through their own research, conservation, establishing husbandry guidelines, and raising awareness. The Virginia Aquarium is home to one of five Tomistoma breeding pairs in the US and the sixth American facility to have success in breeding Tomistoma. We're proud to announce that our Volunteer League, through the Virginia Aquarium Foundation, recently awarded a total of $25,000 in scholarships to seven high-achieving Aquarium volunteers! The scholarship winners are recent 2026 high school graduates selected through an application process requiring a minimum of 125 Aquarium volunteer hours.

The scholarship winners are Mara McDonald, Aiden Porter, Jackson Bennett, Avery Uzzle, Christina Coleman, Kylie Smith, and Alexandra Burris, who were each chosen based on their efforts that exceeded assigned tasks, their quality guest interactions, dependability, school standing, and community involvement.

“Our volunteers are an integral part of the Aquarium’s daily offerings and operations, and these volunteers are worth special recognition as they begin their careers and higher education in the field of science,” said Virginia Aquarium President and CEO, Cynthia Whitbred-Spanoulis.

The seven volunteers received various scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $6,000. Learn more about these scholarship winners and their accomplishments at the latest news release on our website: https://virginiaaquarium.com/news-room/virginia-aquarium-awards-25-000-in-scholarships

Happy World Sea Turtle Day! These ancient reptile species help maintain the balance of marine ecosystems by feeding on other animals within the food web, keeping populations in check for crustaceans, jellies, corals, seagrasses and more. Our team is proud to support conservation efforts to protect sea turtles, including with our Stranding Response Program, which has been busy recently with the beginning of hooked sea turtle season! It's been a busy survey season for our local Osprey Watch team! The Lynnhaven River is part of the largest breeding site for this iconic raptor species. Studying their population and breeding success is important to understanding the health of our aquatic ecosystems since their diet is primarily fish. In April, the team began monitoring 43 active osprey nests around the Lynnhaven River area, using a mirror on a tall pole to examine and take photos of nests. As of early June, out of the 43 nests, 23 have failed, meaning the chicks or eggs did not survive. However, the team began banding the remaining nestlings with identifying tags and took both oral and cloacal swab samples to test for avian influenza, assisted by one of our own veterinarians, Dr. Alissa! Thank you to our friends at The Center for Conservation Biology for partnering with our staff on these research surveys!

Happy 40th Birthday to the Virginia Aquarium! 🎉 Our facility first opened on June 14, 1986 as the much smaller Virginia Marine Science Museum, focused on educating the community about our local aquatic ecosystems and wildlife. Today, after multiple expansions and renovations, the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center now spans two buildings and features thousands of animals from both local environments and across the globe. If you haven't checked it out yet, take a look at the full timeline of Our Story, reflecting on our 40-year journey to today: https://virginiaaquarium.com/our-story
