Five years ago, Shed Studios was exactly what the name suggests—a small recording studio in a backyard shed serving friends, artists, and bands here in our local city.

Today, we’re proud to be one of Hampton Roads’ highest-rated recording studios on Google serving clients from coast to coast and around the world.

What started as a passion project has grown into a community of artists, bands, songwriters, podcasters, churches, businesses, and creatives who have trusted us with their stories.

Every review, every project, and every referral has helped make this possible.

And we’re just getting started.

This July, we’re opening our new commercial studio space in Virginia Beach with more room, more capacity, and more capabilities than ever before.

So much has happened the last couple weeks, and honestly, there’s a lot I could say. God has been putting together a story I never could have written myself. It’s been a crazy month, a crazy year, and an incredible journey.

There are a few big announcements coming this month, but I’ll start with this one:

I still can’t believe I’m saying it, but Shed Studios has officially signed a lease and begun construction on a brand-new commercial location off Virginia Beach Blvd partnering within the Distinctive Integrations facility.

What started as a dream in a backyard garden shed is taking its next step forward. More space. More capacity. More capabilities.

To my clients: thank you for trusting me with your music, your stories, your podcasts, your projects, and your vision. None of this happens without you.

To my wife Rachel: thank you for believing in this dream when it was nothing more than an idea in a backyard shed. I love you.

To my team of musicians, engineers, and creatives—especially George Scott, Sherman Smith Jr., Evan Lee, Dave Hummel, Justin Carter, and so many others—thank you for helping bring these projects to life.

There have been many people who have played a part in this journey over the last five years, far too many to name in one post. The names above are simply some of the people helping carry the vision today. This story was built by a community, and I’m grateful for every person who has been part of it.

Five years ago, this dream started in a shed. Today, we’re building something bigger than I ever imagined.

Here’s to the next chapter of Shed Studios.

George and Allen give a quick rundown of one of the core keyboard textures we’ve been using lately at Shed Studios.

The Nord Stage runs into a Boss RV-5 to create extra space, atmosphere, and movement — especially on ambient pads, swells, pianos, and synth layers. We usually keep the Nord fairly dry, then let the RV-5 add width, shimmer, and depth without washing out the mix. The Modulate and Hall settings have become go-tos for helping keys sit further back in the soundstage while still feeling alive.

We also forgot to mention the entire keyboard chain runs through stereo A-Designs REDDIs into the A-Designs Pacificas. The REDDIs add warmth, weight, and harmonic richness while the Pacificas bring forwardness and punch that help the keys feel wide and full of texture.

It’s subtle stuff, but those layers of tone and ambience make a huge difference in creating depth in a mix.

Beautiful morning tracking acoustics at Shed Studios with our 1970 Martin D-28 running through a Royer Labs R-121 and Neumann KM184 — warm low end, detailed top end, and all the character you want from a great acoustic recording.
