As the 25th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, it is an ideal time to remember not only the tragedy, but also the extraordinary stories of compassion that emerged in its wake. ACT I is proud to be performing Come From Away this September, a show that highlights how, in the midst of uncertainty and fear, a small community’s kindness created lasting connections across cultures and borders.
Come From Away is a musical that tells the true story of the small town of Gander, Newfoundland in the days following 9/11. When U.S. airspace is suddenly closed, 38 international planes are diverted to Gander, nearly doubling the town’s population overnight. The musical captures the shock, fear, and uncertainty felt around the world, while focusing on how this remote Canadian community responded with extraordinary kindness and generosity.
As thousands of stranded passengers—referred to as “plane people”—adjust to their unexpected stay, the residents of Gander and nearby towns rally to provide food, shelter, clothing, and comfort. The show follows a wide range of real-life characters, including local leaders, airline crew, and travelers from around the globe, each with their own emotional journey. Ultimately, Come From Away is a story about compassion and shared humanity in the face of tragedy. As the passengers process the events of 9/11 and eventually prepare to return home, the bonds they’ve formed with the people of Gander leave a lasting impact on both groups.
Auditions will be held on Sunday April 12th at 1PM and Monday April 13th at 6:30PM at the Palace Theatre in Vinton. Message us on Facebook or email us at [email protected] with any questions!
