The Open Gallery is proud to welcome Julia Wright for a solo exhibition of her work titled "So Tall Grows the Corn: Rural 'Insouciantism' in the Muck of Modern Times." The title may be ponderous but the work is an eclectic mix of large paintings, monoprints and drawings that explore optimism and humor in the face of the mundanity of modern life.

As a word person by trade, I tend to think of insouciance in the pejorative, as a glib and careless outlook on life in most situations. However, Wright applies the term here to the more positive nature of those who see the world in a carefree, lighthearted, and even blithe way. Make of that term an "ism," and we can infer that Wright believes a rural way of life is not just empathic and sustaining to the individual, but it also can provide a source of inspirational navigation through a life fraught with uncertainty and "muck."

"Focusing on the positive, lighthearted, humorous bits of existing ...is real(rural?) treasure if you can hone it." I think you will agree that she is able to do just that in these works.

Julia Wright lives with her husband Mike and daughter Jo on a farm near Freedom, IN. She is a graduate of VU's Agribusiness dept followed by a degree in Fine Arts, Studio Concentration under the tutelage of such artists as Bernard and Deborah Hagedorn and Andy and Amy Jendrezjewski, so we are sure you will be delighted by her visual sense of wonder in the world.

Artist reception is Friday, July 3, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at The Open Gallery 329 Main Street in Vincennes. A second reception will be held on Friday, August 7 with a new set of paintings. The show will close at the end of August.

Gallery hours: Tuesday- Saturday, 12:30-4:30p.m.; closed Sunday and Monday.

Art with Heart: A Special Opportunity to Give Back
APRIL 3, 2026 - 5-8 PM

Artist Andrew Rosenbarger is offering select works at special discounts - but this isn’t just about collecting art. It’s about honoring a teacher who changed lives.

David Runge, Andrew’s high school art teacher and mentor, is currently facing the early stages of dementia. One of the brightest moments in his day is receiving mail - real letters, filled with kindness and connection.

Andrew invites art lovers to participate in something meaningful. In exchange for a brief note of encouragement to Mr. Runge, Andrew will offer a deep discount when purchasing one of his select original artworks. No need to worry about what to say - pen, paper, and a simple template will be provided.

This is more than an art sale. It’s a chance to give back. To honor a mentor. To remind someone that their life’s work mattered. And you’ll take home a beautiful piece of art, too.
