Mariana Noreña's work explores how humans relate to place through ecology, history, and mythology. Through research-driven and site-responsive installations, she works with locally derived materials to create connections between natural phenomena and daily life.

Her work at The Mill reflects on the glacial forces that shaped the moraine landscape of Vicksburg and its surroundings. As ice slowly melts, stones gathered from the local glacial moraine are revealed, making visible a history of movement, erosion, and accumulation. The piece reflects on melting as a form of transformation and on the ways landscapes carry memory, inviting us to slow down and consider our relationship to time, geological memory, and place, and how ancient glacial movement continues to shape the landscape we inhabit today.

Spring 2026 Resident, Mariana Noreña is here!

Mariana Noreña explores how humans relate to place through ecology, history, and mythology. Her research-driven, site-responsive practice investigates the material memory of landscapes and natural phenomena, creating echoes between geological processes and daily life. Working with earth matter and locally sourced materials, she reveals intimate and collective stories that speak to the symbiotic relationship between humans and their environment.
Mariana holds dual bachelor's degrees in Design and Fine Arts with an emphasis in Painting and Drawing from La Universidad de Los Andes (Bogotá, Colombia), for which she received a merit distinction on her thesis project “You Were Here” which explored the landscape of the body through alternative portraiture. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Fiber and Material Studies from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Welcoming our Spring 2026 Resident Xingyu Huang!

Xingyu Huang is a Chicago and Los Angeles–based artist working across sculpture, architecture, and digital media. Her practice examines adaptation as a shared condition between human and non-human systems, tracing the emotional, infrastructural, and ecological reverberations of transformation.

Through collaborations with scientists and local communities, Huang integrates biological and computational systems into her installations—constructing hybrid ecologies where plants, bacteria, sensors, and sound coalesce into responsive environments. Her research-based and site-specific works translate data and environmental processes into affective sonic and moving-image experiences.

Huang’s work has been exhibited at the Hyde Park Art Center, University of Chicago, Zhou B Art Center, 4C Gallery, and SAIC Galleries. In 2025, she contributed to a collaborative project featured in the Chicago Architecture Biennial.
She received the Arts, Science + Culture Initiative Grant from the University of Chicago and was nominated for the AICAD Teaching Fellowship. Huang earned her MFA in studio art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and dual degrees in Architecture and Environment Design from the University of Edinburgh and Donghua University.
