How Petrosino Paved The Way: Italian Americans in Law Enforcement

Joseph Petrosino, an Italian immigrant who became the first Italian American to become a Lieutenant Detective in the New York City Police Department. Lt. Det. Petrosino created “The Italian Squad” to fight against the “Black Hand”, which was the beginning of the American mafia. Lt. Det. Petrosino was assassinated on March 12, 1909 in Palermo, Sicily while conducting an investigation on the Italian criminals who had come to America.

He used innovative techniques such as forensics and community policing and, in addition to the Italian Squad, created the Bomb Squad and Canine Squad, still in use today. He also set an example for future NYPD notables such as Det. Frank Serpico and Det. Georgianna Dibs DeRosa. We honor his memory and legacy in this exhibit.
