VENUES WE LOVE: GROUND FLOOR STUDIOS 🎨

Ground Floor Studios Artist Cooperative is an artist-owned, democratically-operated cooperative on Madison’s near East Side, located on the first floor of Linden Cohousing.

Home to a group of local visual artists working across painting, ceramics, metals, printmaking, jewelry, and more, Ground Floor Studios was created by artists looking for a more permanent, affordable home for their work.

And that’s what we love about it.

At Slate Blue Studios, we believe artists need more than inspiration—they need space, community, and places where creativity can thrive.

Ground Floor Studios is a wonderful example of artists building that creative ecosystem together—and being part of the larger community at Linden Cohousing.

ARTISTS WE LOVE: MARIA AMALIA WOOD

Maria Amalia Wood is a Honduran-born artist, educator, and community organizer based in Middleton, WI. Her work brings together textiles, handmade paper, embroidery, and storytelling to explore memory, migration, identity, and belonging.

Through projects like Bordando Memorias and Unidas por Hilos, Maria Amalia creates spaces where Latina immigrants can share their stories and build community—one stitch at a time.

We love how she shows us that art can be both a creative practice and a way to connect with one another.

Join artist Chuck Lanius for a three-part lab in creating shapes and objects using paper clay.

Class 1: Introduction to an easy artist medium that you can make at home. Get started by making a personalized flower or bud vase.
Class 2: Create bowl or jug shapes using balloons. If time allows, decorate your project from Class 1.
Class 3: A chance to show your creative side by making the piece of your choice.

November 15, 22 and 29 from 1-3pm.

We talk a lot about creativity at Slate Blue Studios—but creativity isn't just about making something beautiful.

It actually rewires your brain for better mental health.

How does that work? Sometimes it's about getting out of your head and into your hands. Making a mess. Trying something new. Focusing on one small thing. Sitting alongside other people. Taking a break from being productive.

All of these facets of creativity reduce stress, anxiety, and depression— and increase emotional regulation and executive function.

Creativity can give us space to express, play, explore, and connect.

Did you know that this pale Cerulean Blue was Pantone’s very first Color of the Year?

Back in 2000, Pantone launched its Color of the Year program with this beautiful blue—a color inspired by the sky and the sea, and one that captured a feeling of calm, possibility and looking toward the future.

And that’s part of what makes color so fascinating.

A color can become more than just a color. It can capture a moment, influence design and fashion, show up in our homes and artwork, and even become part of how we remember a particular time.

Cerulean Blue was Pantone’s first.
And 25+ years later, we’re still talking about it.

❤️ COLOR STORY: COCHINEAL RED

What if one of the world's most famous reds came from a tiny insect?

Cochineal insects live on prickly pear cactus in Mexico and Central America. When dried and crushed, they produce an incredibly rich red dye.

Indigenous peoples used cochineal long before European contact. After the Spanish conquest, its brilliant color became a valuable global commodity—associated with wealth, power and status.

And here's the wild part: we still use it today.

Cochineal extract and carmine are FDA-approved color additives used in foods, including some candies, dairy products and beverages — along with some cosmetics.

Look at the ingredient list and you may actually see them listed by name — a reminder that transparent labeling is so important for people with allergies, vegans, vegetarians, and those following kosher or halal dietary laws.

From ancient textiles to your grocery store shelf...

That's a lot of history for one little bug...and color!
