💟 Purple has long symbolized royalty, mystery, creativity, and transformation — partly because true purple dye was once incredibly rare.

For more than 1,500 years, Indigenous Mixtec artisans in Oaxaca, Mexico, have created brilliant purple dye by carefully “milking” sea snails called purpura and returning them safely to the ocean.

Did you know pink 🩷 was once considered “for boys”?

In the early 1900s, pink was viewed as a stronger, more masculine color because it came from red. Blue, on the other hand, was often associated with softness and femininity.

Color meanings can shift over time — shaped by culture, marketing, history, and emotion.

That’s part of what we’ll explore in Color Story, a new mixed media workshop with Slate Blue Studios.

Through collage, paint, texture, and layered monochromatic artmaking, we’ll discover how one single hue can hold countless meanings.
