I had a vivid and wonderful dream last night about kelp. I was spending the day on an ocean cliff and noticed a young kelp a little below the surface of the water. In the background I overheard someone gleefully shout, “the kelp are returning!” As the day passed, the kelp got closer and closer to the surface and I was amazed to be watching it grow in real time (they can grow 2 feet per day). Now that I’m awake and had coffee it’s plausible that if I saw this in real life, the tide was just changing. But I’m hanging on to the beauty and whimsy that I dreamed I watched kelp growing and returning.

Since it is World Ocean Day today I’m suggesting you do something good today for our ocean. You can donate or sign up to volunteer for an ocean-helping nonprofit, make a choice/goal to skip plastic, take a beach walk and pick up trash, or even teach someone you know something cool about the ocean and the things that call it home. We are more likely to protect the things we know and care about. 🌊🩵🌊

Happy World Seaweed Day!

Believe it or not, this Ascophyllum - Old Man of the Sea - is the first seaweed I have made this year. But when I saw that this day was coming up in my calendar I knew I had to remedy that. This is one of a few seaweeds I am working on right now. They’d all be done today if I didn’t take a big spill during a run this last weekend so now we are just going with the flow and they’ll be done when my shoulder and arm allow.

Several weeks ago I heard an interview of someone that was studying s***m whales. Their drone recorded a gathering of females, unrelated, and for some unknown reason. As they watched with curiosity there was a sudden gush of red, and a baby s***m whale was brought to the surface. It seems that newborns cannot swim to the surface on their own at first and the gathering of females was to help the birthing mother by guiding her calf safely to take its first breath. How incredible! When I heard this story I felt a deep connection to this event and to these whales. Not just as a mother, but in my past working at births and witnessing the support of doulas, midwives, family, and friends that all come together to support the beautiful transition of bringing a new life earthside. We are not so different. So I knew without a doubt that this year I had to make my s***m whale mama and calf design from my Ocean Mothers collection. In celebration of motherhood and our connection to other species we share this beautiful world with.

Something about citrus and the bright colors and smells of them is just so joyful! Maybe it’s the fond memories I have of picking tangerines off my grandmother’s tree or using a stick with a jug to pluck the highest oranges off of her mother’s tree. Or maybe it’s the way the aroma that fills a room from peeling a clementine can brighten the darkest of winter days. Either way, this joyful collection is coming to tomorrow for their Mother’s Day market from 10-3. Hope to see you there!

This year’s FMSEA conference theme is “Connecting the Dots” And, since I am lucky enough to be an artist vendor this year, I decided to create new designs inspired by their theme. A whale shark and a couple spotted eagle rays. I’ll be bringing these with me to FAU Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute for the conference this Saturday!

I’ve shared this story before, but on the day we went to take photos to announce my second pregnancy at the beach I found a complete keyhole sand dollars on the beach. What a special find (especially a whole one!), and what a special memento of that day. So I made some this year as part of my Mother’s Day collection!

The full collection drops this Sunday (the 19th) at 7pm ☀️🐚🩵

This year’s addition to my Ocean Mothers series is a little different and I love it. I’ve been holding onto this design in my sketchbook for a while and I felt like this was finally the year for it. And a special thanks to for inspiring me to have the courage to post rough cuts of a piece to the main feed instead tucking away this step of the process only in my stories.
