The man, the myth, the legend!
Let me introduce “Carvin” Marvin Howard, this man deserves a standing ovation! He has faithfully carved out the cedar salmon for the “Knee Deep in Salmon” Vernonia Salmon Festival art auction for more years than I can count! Sadly, this will be his final year. Saying we greatly appreciate his hard work, talent and great stories would be an understatement! Thank you for sharing your talent with us for so many years, you will be greatly missed!
I will be reaching out to artists on our 2026 waitlist soon! We are waiting on a few changes to the “Artist Contract”, then I’ll set up a date for salmon to be released for pick up.
If you are a local artist or know someone who would like to participate in the fun please reach out!
Thank you for your patience with us, looking forward to another great year with talented artists!
Kathleen
2026 Artist Coordinator

*If anyone knows of a woodworking hoppiest that would be interested in the carving job, please reach out!

The Full Moon of May is known as Flower Moon to signify the flowers that bloom during this month. Native Americans called it Budding Moon, Egg Laying Moon, and Planting Moon.

Many wildflowers bloom in May in the Northern Hemisphere, where these traditional Full Moon names originated. For example, many types of anemone, wild garlic, indigo, bluebells, lupine, sundrops, and violets, to name just a few. It is no wonder that the colorful displays these flowers create in nature have inspired people to call this time after them.

It's time! Spring is finally here and after years in the ocean, the first spring Chinook are pushing upstream and racing against the current toward the rivers where they were born. For salmon rivers, this is the moment everything feels like it's come back to life.

👀Where will you watch Chinook return?
Umpqua (OR)
Rogue (OR)
Willamette (OR)
Columbia (WA/OR)
Chehalis (WA)
Fraser (BC)
Skeena (BC)
Kenai (AK).. and more!
