Just 5 miles down the Banks-Vernonia State trail from Vernonia Springs is the small timber town of Vernonia population 2374. Back in the early 1920’s Vernonia was home to the Oregon – American Lumber mill which was the largest Douglas Fir mill in the world at the time. The Vernonia Lake pond was used by the mill to float logs. The image is of the old mill powerhouse. In 2008 the movie Twilight was filmed in the powerhouse. In 1961 the film Ring of Fire, the mill was intentionally burned down as part of the movie.
