Now on view through August 30th as part of our Pee-wee Herman tribute exhibition, “I Know You Are But What Am I,” is this incredible 18x24 silkscreen print by Johnny Rutledge.

Johnny Rutledge is a narrative-driven printmaker who brilliantly balances classical composition with modern, underground iconography. His work often highlights working-class narratives and comments on social issues. When he isn’t pulling prints, Johnny serves as the lead visual creative with the Dallas-based nonprofit Artstillery, capturing oral histories of marginalized communities to turn them into immersive, projection-mapped performances.

“Growing up, Pee-Wee was never not on the TV. At my house, my friends’ houses and anywhere else I could get it. At a very early age, I was aware of the wonder and joy that Pee-Wee offered through his imagination and unapologetic creativity. It absolutely helped shape my young mind and the artist I was to become.

I painted ‘Welcome To The Place Where Anything Can Happen’ by incorporating all of the playhouse characters I loved as a kid. I loved them all, but these were the ones that stuck with me all through the years.” — Darren Vorel
