ALP Luminary: Sister Corita Kent — highlighting the people and ideas that shape Art Life Practice.

Artist, educator, and social justice advocate, Sister Corita Kent believed creativity could change the way we see the world. She transformed religious imagery into a vivid language of advertising slogans, pop graphics, biblical verse, and literature.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
By borrowing the language of mass media to express faith, peace, and tolerance, Corita made work that felt both modern and personal. Her classroom became legendary and was praised by Buckminster Fuller as one of the most inspiring experiences of his life — where students sketched in supermarkets, painted blindfolded, and treated the world itself as their source material.

Corita’s language-based artwork even inspired one of the prompts in ALP’s Guided Sketchbook. Her legacy is a reminder that creative practice isn’t just what you make — it’s how you pay attention, how you move through the world, and what you choose to do with what you find.
