DID YOU KNOW?

After success in Virginia and New York, Lewis Hallam decided to take the company to Jamaica for "a warmer climate and better audiences."

BAD DECISION.

Jamaica in 1754:
• Tropical diseases
• Company members dying
• Financial collapse
• Lewis's own death (1755)

He was right about needing to move. Wrong about where.

Sometimes the risk doesn't pay off.

DID YOU KNOW?

After one year in Williamsburg, several Hallam Company members were in DEBT from:

• Excessive drinking
• Gambling
• Prostitution
• Overspending

Lewis Hallam had to:

• Mortgage the Williamsburg theatre
• Pay everyone's debts
• Pack up and move to New York

Success on stage ≠ Success off stage.

DID YOU KNOW?

When Lewis Hallam arrived in Virginia (June 1752), he applied to Governor Robert Dinwiddle for permission to perform.

The Governor's first answer? NO.

Why? The previous theatre company (Murray & Kean) had been a disaster: drunkenness, embezzlement, and lying to officials.

Hallam had to CONVINCE the Governor that his company was different.

After "much debate," the Governor said yes.

One "no" away from a completely different history.

DID YOU KNOW?

In the musical, Lewis Hallam Sr. has a song called "What Am I Thinking?" where he questions his own decision:

"What am I thinking? I'm crazy with fear
Packing my family and leaving from here
A long uncertain voyage across the sea
With no idea of our future! What's happening to me?"

But by the end:

"I know what I'm thinking, I have what it takes!"

The journey from doubt to courage. That's the story.

DID YOU KNOW?

BEFORE coming to America, Mrs. Hallam was succeeding in London.

She was:

• Getting bigger roles
• Working at major theatres
• Building her reputation
• Making good money

She gave it ALL UP to go to America with her husband.

Sacrificed her career success for his risky venture.

That's partnership. That's love. That's courage.

DID YOU KNOW?

Lewis Hallam Sr. didn't decide alone to go to America.

He asked his wife: "Will you go?"

If she'd said no, the trip wouldn't have happened.

She was the star. The talent. The draw.

Without her, no show.

His wife said YES.

Every great adventure requires a partner who says yes. 🤝🎭

DID YOU KNOW?

When Lewis Hallam negotiated with Captain Lee for ship passage, he demanded:

✓ Exclusive use of the ship (no other cargo)
✓ Private accommodations for families
✓ Captain's quarters for his family
✓ 6 hours daily for rehearsals
✓ Crew as audience for feedback
✓ Storage space for costumes/props
✓ 200-pound bonus on safe arrival

The Captain had never heard such demands.

But Lewis paid 31 pounds per person (above standard rate).

Know your worth. Pay for what you need.

DID YOU KNOW?

Lewis Hallam Sr. was the YOUNGER brother of William, who was the manager, the businessman, the leader. Lewis was "just" an actor. A "low comedian" (comic relief roles). But when it came time to DO the impossible thing?

William sent Lewis.

Because sometimes the "lesser" sibling is actually braver.

DID YOU KNOW?

William Hallam mortgaged EVERYTHING to send his brother to America.

His investment in 1752:
• 1,000+ pounds (over $200,000 today)
• Theatre equipment for 20 plays
• Ship passage for 15 people
• Captain's bonus
• Starting capital for the company

He stayed in London. Facing bankruptcy. While his brother sailed away with
his money.

That's not just risk. That's ALL IN on family.
