Honey by Jean Echevarria. I had long been a fan of these ancient Egyptian insects that I thought were bees but turned out to be flies. Flies and honey are a natural partnership to this day. The metallic ink was a final golden element. I hope it's a happy summer image for you.

A new print by Jean: When Cats Became Gods. I have been entranced by Ancient Egypt pretty much my whole life. I think a lot of it had to do with the collection of the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. I was able to travel in Egypt several years ago and hope to go again. Meanwhile, this print brings together the cat goddess Bastet, the lotus, and the 5 pointed star seen frequently in tombs and ancient art depicting the night sky. Many black cats have a small white patch on their chest. Touched by the goddess?

New garden sculpture by Alex: "Rabbit in the Moon". I made the Chinese legend of the rabbit mixing an elixir for immortality instead of the Japanese legend of the rabbit pounding mochi. Available during the VIVA Studio Tour, at Little Bird Garden, and this year's VIPP Auction.

Jean's first new print for 2024! Canal Kat was inspired by my trip to the Netherlands in October. We often walked along a canal from our apartment, and one day this beautiful cat walked right up to me and flopped on his back so that I could rub his belly. Pure love! Two days later, we walked along the same canal, and I was hoping to see him. There he was, sitting in a window like the perfect feline creature he is. The colors and background of the print are inspired by our time at the Van Gogh Museum. Van Gogh's patterns and particular palette are my favorite of all the painters of that period. That trip gave me so much inspiration, and more prints will spring from that well. Happy New Year!

Planet Eno: new print by Jean. I've always been a big fan of Brian Eno. His ambient compositions have always helped me to feel centered, and they have sometimes helped me get through very difficult times. Lately, I've been listening to him a lot again while printmaking because he sends me in new directions within my own mind. Peaceful, motivating, and otherworldly. Brian Eno, this one's for you. I hope you all like it, too.

Another print by Jean: Catching Air. I had just enough time to do one more before VIVA Art Studio Tour. This one involved lots of cutting of the woodblock to create all those curves and turns. I think butterflies are magical creatures, and they twist and turn on currents invisible to the human eye. My goal was to show that the butterfly is one with the air, so the patterns on the wings continue in the background. If you want to feel it, you'll need a skateboard!

A new print by Jean. I call this one Pick Your Poison. The title came first. I started thinking about poisonous plants, and Bleeding Heart is one of those. I'd been wanting to carve/print a Bleeding Heart plant for quite some time, having grown them both in Colorado and here on Vashon. They look rather Victorian to me, and the idea of poisonous flowers feels rather Victorian, too. I think Miss Willmott is still in my mind. Be the bird and enjoy the view!

Hiya is the new print by Jean. Short for hyacinth, it also works for a flower popping out of a bulb and greeting you in spring. My buddy Terri gives me a bulb in this little green glass vase every Christmas, and this year's pink bulb was perfect for a woodcut. I had fun playing with the print in the foreground and making it warp as it moved through the water in the vase. I hope the image brings you a breath of spring when you need it.

Jean's latest reduction woodcut print: Miss Willmott's Ghost. Miss Willmott was a horticulturist in the 19th century. It was said that she would drop seeds such as these into flower beds that were a little too perfect. I love her spirit! The flower is named for her, and it's a little thorny, thistley beauty. I kept the palette pale for a ghostly effect. The star pattern is from looking at lace, and silver ink was to bring in ghostly highlights as well. I bow to you, Ms. Willmott.

Know Your Owls: new print by Jean. These are three owls frequently seen in our Vashon-Maury environment, and I realized I don't always know them apart. Having studied them this closely to do the print, I think I've got it now. Do you know all three? You can report back to me on February 3 at Swiftwater Gallery, where we will have our First Friday grand opening from 5-8 pm. My three owls will be there to greet you.

New reduction woodcut print by Jean: First Contact. This image started with seeing some small mushrooms in the forest that already looked like a woodcut print. Our merlot bush was turning pink, and a cat is always welcome. I tend to think that mushrooms are in small communities, and every contact for a cat is like a first
contact with new species. They put one paw tentatively forward and see what they've encountered. Friend or foe? This image seems very quiet to me. Like a cat on patrol in early morning.

I've always liked Alberto Giacometti's sculptures and he inspired me to make something different. With these "Bodhisattva" sculptures, I add cement instead of carving it off. Come see them at the Holiday Studio Tour this December.

How to Be a Frog...new print by Jean. Surely, you can't imagine why. This summer, giant pollywogs appeared in Mukai pond, where I walk with my friends weekly. They formed this murky strip at the edge of the water, and it was just alive with the flipping and flopping of these frogs in training. I thought they were so fascinating, especially because they were huge. Aliens, invaders, or just fabulous frogs on Vashon Island? No matter, here is my summer 2022 Vashon event to remember.

The Artists at WabiSabi Studios

Artist Statement for Jean Echevarria, Woodcut Printmaker:

Born in Chicago, I lived most of my adult life in Colorado with stints in Wisconsin, Japan, and Arizona. I studied fine arts at Colorado State University before focusing on linguistics and teaching college level English as a Second Language to students from every corner of the world. I lived in Japan for a bit as part of that career, and that, my work with international students, and international travel, led me to an appreciation of Asian arts and aesthetics, guiding me to my eventual focus on woodcut printmaking.

My main work is reduction woodcuts, in which one piece of wood is used as the print block, layering colors and reducing the wood surface with each color printed. It’s a complex process that requires a lot of planning beforehand, yet it allows me to make many spontaneous decisions as I go. I also press all my work by hand, using a Japanese tool called a barren.

I moved to Vashon Island in 2013, and my fascination with this landscape greatly influences my choice of subject. I also print images of animals, sea life, and conceptual or natural abstractions. I love to show the process I use, and I welcome visitors to the studio I share with my husband Alex, WabiSabi Studios, in the central heart of Vashon Island.
