btw MOMA is pleased to present the work of “Two forks and one spoon/The art of Yoshi Kitai and David Mylan”.

This exhibition is on view in the gallery until January. As our last show of the year, it is wondrous, beautiful, and it is the inspiration will see us into the new year.

One wall of the gallery is filled with one of Yoshi Kitai's painting with silver leaf and paint on wood. The silver is shaped like decorative clouds. It changes in color and brightness as it reflects the light. It transforms as your point of view changes, and reacts to your shadow. Behind the clouds are arches made of tiny color dots that graduate from light blue to dark indigo, and pink to red. The silver is a curtain framing another space filled with vibrating colors. It is both alien and inviting.

Mylan's sculpture is a piece of welded steel formed into a ball shape. The sculpture is rough and bumpy with small windows of shiny metal peeking through the rust. We found this piece while visiting Mylan's studio. The orb we acquired for the btw collection is unfinished in the eye of the artist. It was in the shop halfway formed wait to added to a bigger piece. The tentative nature of the work, paused in the process of becoming, is very poetic. We are lucky the artist was willing to part with it as is. In its raw state, it feels as if this sculpture fell from the sky.

btwMOMA is pleased to present “Untitled (TBD. Yah. Right.)” by Robert Fields.

Always poignant, clever, and crafted, Robert Fields' objects comment on the present moment with bite and humor. The button Fields created has the word GUILTY printed in all capitals three times. Each word is placed above the other to make a clean stack. The letter T is in red all three times referencing Donald Trump.

With TBD in the title we wonder if Fields will change the title at the conclusion of Trumps trials. Will the trails end with a guilty verdict? The artist is skeptical.

The button is displayed in the gallery with an antique wood frame. A small nod to the fact that corruption is timeless. Although Fields’s work is very contemporary, the abuses of power have been with us forever.

“Did I stutter, mo********er?”

Samuel L. Jackson reported to Vanity Fair in 2019 that the word “mo********er” helped him to stop stuttering when he was a child. “I stuttered for a long time, and it actually did help me stop. The word gave me something to focus on and released the pressure…” In this context, the obscenity is a form of medicine with curative powers… uttering these syllables releases the heaviness of language.
Where this word comes from, it’s hard to say. The most reliable source in my mind is the African American oral tradition which dates it back to enslaved times. It is said that the word referred to the slaveowner rapists who impregnated enslaved women. It was a word meant to excuse the white male from being a father to his children. Along this vein, the word mo********er has been used to describe loathsome people- those who take what is not theirs, in spirit and in flesh.
More recently, the meaning of the word mo********er has morphed again. Now it is akin to “badass,” someone with toughness and credibility. Into this framework I choose to place it, in light of Samuel L. Jackson’s use of the word as a remedy. A mo********er, a father, a mother, or a badass, show what they mean in their actions, which are powerful, defiant, truthful, and clear as day.
Did I stutter, mo********er?

BtwMOMA is proud to present: "Glad I got to hit that" and "Baby Mama No.3" by BloC .

About the artists:
BloC is an artist and life partnership of Britt Humphrey and Clint Caffee. The purpose of their work is to create a laugh, elicit thought, and point out the irony of their lives and life overall. Selected works for this show highlight a lack of ability to direct our own life narrative despite attempts through presentation and communication. You just never know where life will take you!

BtwMOMA is proud to present: "Circulation" by Harrison Higgs.

Artist statement:
The subversive act of cinematic montage had a revelatory impact on storytelling. My interest in montage, haiku (tanka), the dream state, and "enigmatic objects" all have to do with the narrative puzzle and with the human impulse to generate meaning out of fragments. I connect this activity to the broader themes of ecology, animism, and ritual.

My working process borrows from methods used in set design, Asian tray landscapes, and hoarding. In truth I'm incorporating practices from many domains, including-- haute cuisine, horticulture, alt-photography... as well as strategies found in science and industry, such as terraforming and hand-building methods.

BtwMOMA is proud to present: "Fred" by Andrew C. Lorish.

Artist Statement:
My father was born in 1943. His name is Fred. His father was named Fred too. His father was a medic in WWII and a doctor in Medford, Oregon. His father was a jerk. My father was a conscientious objector of the Vietnam War and a Japanese scholar and educator. He is not a jerk. Three days a week I call him in the morning and we go on a walk together. He is in Eugene and I am in Bend. It is really nice. Unfortunately, I have nothing sardonic to add to a needed conversation about fathers. I just earnestly look up to him. He is a good man. He likes gardening, coffee, and cooking. He is slightly embarrassed by my deific depiction of him. One day I hope to have a garden.

Note - When btw received this sculpture it was in a box with a bottle of superglue, and a note that it may need some repair. It did. Our conservation team has been gingerly restoring "Fred". Now on their second bottle of superglue, they are close to completion. The images here show the restoration in progress.

BtwMOMA is proud to present: "Cis Interpellation." by Alain Ilargi

Cis Interpellation is a zoomed-in interpretation of Frantz Fanon’s words, “There is no disproportion between the life of the family and the life of the nation.” I wrote this poem amidst an ongoing genocide of trans people while simulataneously trying to raise myself back to life after the pain and terror of growing up in white evangelicalism. In other words, I’m trying to piece together a life after its been completely shattered by the ones who once raised me – who are the same ones who seek to end people like me. Outside the damage’s uniform center the pain remains but with distance there’s room to branch out and make anew.

Alaia Ilargi (they/she) is a disabled, transfemme poet, and settler, who is looking for others seeking to change that last descriptor. They are a survivor of evangelicalism and white kinship. Alaia resides in Portland, Oregon, and outside of writing, she loves pro-wrestling, table-top RPGs, and talking s**t to power. Their work will appear in issue 006 of Pile Press

btwMOMA is proud to present: Katherine Curry's “I'll Wash Your Mouth Out” as part of Motherfu***rs and Other Fathers. Shown in the gallery with Rachel Aponte’s “Papi”

Artist statement:
“I'll Wash Your Mouth Out” is a 2”x3” object of a photograph submerged in a bar of glycerin hand soap. In reference to the title, this work depicts a highly obscured photograph of a father and daughter in a bar of soap. The classic (outdated) punishment for backtalk, misdeeds, or foul language is to put a bar of soap in a child’s mouth to “clean” them. The disfiguration of soap from water, or potentially saliva, covers the figure of the man, placing him both as a figure of authority, while also placing him inside the “mouth” of the child present, alluding to sexual acts. The disfigured man acts as a symbol of abused authority, of blurred parental lines. With his photographic image heavily distorted by water damage, he loses personal identity, and now becomes a looming figure remembered post mortem only by the effects of the trauma he wrought. In this, “I’ll Wash Your Mouth Out” holds a dark sense of humor in the memory of two very real threats of punishment for misbehavior.

BtwMOMA is proud to present: Kiel Fletcher‘s “Untitled(parenting books)” as part of Motherfu***rs and Other Fathers
Shown here with Michael Lazarus’ Chair No. 3

Artist Statement: My work is a commentary on the various parenting books that flood the market with often conflicting and confusing advice for parents. Instead of relying on these books, I have utilized ChatGPT, an advanced language model, to generate a list of good parenting techniques. By using artificial intelligence to produce these tips, I am highlighting the absurdity of the idea that there is one "right" way to parent. Each tip produced by ChatGPT is unique and shows the diversity of approaches that can be effective in raising a child. Ultimately, this work challenges the notion that there is a universal "good" way to parent and reinforces the absolute madness of the pursuit of perfection in parenting.
