In recognition of 55 years of Magic Mountain, we'll share our park's history that began when the front gates swung open for the first time to the general public, May 29, 1971. πŸŽ‰

Featured is the iconic Magic Mountain Skytower. Initial construction began in October 1970 by the construction firm Aggressive Erectors & Bridgemen Inc. The Skytower was manufactured by the Swiss amusement ride company Intamin AG, standing 385 ft. over the park.

The Magic Mountain public relations department sent out a press release declaring the park's progress and grand opening:

"Magic Mountain, is a major ride and amusement center, designed for enjoyment by both families and teenagers living in or visiting the Southern California area. "

Situated on a 200-acre site, Magic Mountain will offer guests their choice of a wide range of gentle and "white knuckler" amusement rides, special attractions and wholesome family entertainment - - all for just the admission price. The only additional charges will be for food and souvenirs."

Schedule for opening in the spring of 1971, this unique new ride park is located in the valley of Valencia approximately 36 miles northwest of the Los Angeles Civic Center. The site is situated just west of the Golden State freeway on Henry Mayo Drive, near the new city of Valencia now being built on the historic Newhall Ranch.

Now in the construction stage, the Magic Mountain Entertainment center will encompass approximately 65 acres. There will be an additional 50 acres of paved parking for approximately 5000 cars. And additional 85 acres are available for expansion purposes. Total cost of the Magic Mountain project will be in excess of 20 million.

All design and planning for Magic Mountain is being prepared by R. Duell and Associates of Santa Monica, a firm with considerable experience in designing amusement centers.

Randal Duell was architect and designer of Six Flags Over Texas Six Flags Over Georgia and the Astro World in Houston.

Magic Mountain is a joint venture between subsidiaries of Seaworld, Inc. San Diego and Newhall Land and Farming Company, Valencia.

June 29, 1978, it was the tallest, fastest, and longest wooden roller coaster in the world. Colossus stood 125 feet tall, reached speeds of 62 mph, and featured two parallel tracks for side-by-side racing.

Building it required over 1.2 million board feet of lumber and 12,000 gallons of white paint. After 36 years of operation and over 68 million rides, the original wooden coaster closed on August 16, 2014.

A few of us still remember opening dayβ€”standing in line, waiting to ride our very first looping roller coaster. πŸ™ƒ

Rare photos taken of the loops other side and once flowing waterfall under the queue line bridge. The one-loop wonder!!
