In honor of World Art Day, we share John Singleton Copley's incomparable Watson and the Shark. Painted in 1778, the painting depicts the rescue of Brook Watson, an Englishman, who went for a swim in Havana Harbor, Cuba. He was attacked by sharks, and despite the dire scene, survived with only the loss of his foot. This version (he painted three) is in the National Gallery in Washington, DC. Make a trip soon to see this and other masterworks of American marine art!

The Center for American Marine Art is proud to announce the 41st Schaefer International Marine Art Exhibition, which will premiere at the Sailing Museum in Newport, Rhode Island on October 11th.

Named after Rudolph J. Schaefer III, a benefactor of the marine art world and founder of the Maritime Gallery at Mystic and its International Exhibition, the Schaefer family is reviving the forty-first iteration of the show, this year at the Sailing Museum in Newport, Rhode Island.

PURPOSE:

To gather and recognize important new contributions to the field of contemporary marine art from around the world.

To stimulate discussion of aesthetic and scholarly standards among marine artists and connoisseurs.

To support the mission statement of the Center for American Marine Art

Founded at the Mystic Seaport Museum, the Center for American Marine Art was created to preserve and promote America's visual maritime heritage.

We do that through imaging programs that will use state-of-the-art processes including photometric stereography and near infrared 3D scanning. These images are processed and preserved for the future.

The Center will create a free, online database of marine works available to scholars and the general public.

The Center supports artist residencies at museums including five this summer at the Mystic Seaport Museum. We plan to expand this program to work with other leading maritime museums around the country.

The Center will also be holding the prestigious Schaefer International Marine Art Exhibition in October of 2024 in Newport, Rhode Island, at the Sailing Museum. The Schaefer International is the successor of the Mystic International, which ran for 40 years before Covid. This will be the first year of the exhibition since then, renamed for maritime heritage activist Rudolph J. Schaefer III, who built Mystic's annual show and gallery.
