Did you know that Vail P***c Library's Galleria Display features the 50th Anniversary of Christo and Jeanne- Claude's Acclaimed " Valley Curtain??

Created in partnership with Summervail Art Workshop Legacy Project, this display shows the artist's masterwork Valley Curtain (1970-72) who survived a mere 28 hours in the face of overpowering winds across the Grand Hogback Mountain Range in Rifle, Colorado, the fleeting project would send ripples through the art world. Valley Curtain was one of the couple’s first grand scale projects executed in the United States and 50 years later, the wide-ranging impact of Valley Curtain on the international art world and members of Colorado's creative community can still be felt today.

“Virtually everyone who has ever worked with them (Christo and Jeanne-Claude) has earned an enormous respect for them that you absolutely cannot buy. I believe this kind of respect seems to be sorely lacking throughout our World today …
When I first met them both at Colorado State University - many people traveled from both Coasts to honor them at CSU's exhibition of the Valley Curtain Project. However, I could sense that an additional something was up. When I asked numerous attendees during the exhibition evening, including Tom Golden - not one would divulge a word about what more they might be there for! Many did say simply - "Christo asked us not to talk about it . . ." - - - whatever it was. I felt that if I had given each of them 'truth serum' - none would have breathed anything . . . I found out sometime later - they had all convened the next day in Broomfield and Louisville, Colorado, with their chosen engineer Ted Dougherty, to witness some early tests for the Gates Project!”

On Thursday, July 28 at the Vail Mountain School, Summervail and Vail Symposium welcomed over 100 guests to “Christo and Jeanne-Claude: Reflecting on the 50th Anniversary of ‘Valley Curtain’ and the Artists’ Legacy.” Filled with fascinating insights about the conception of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s wide-ranging projects, the artists’ unique strategies for shepherding installations through to completion, and many amusing memories, even members of our esteemed panel confessed to learning new details about “Valley Curtain” and its short-lived installation back in 1972.
