Join Sinfonia da Camera, July 24 — 29, in Smith Memorial Hall on the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus as we welcome renowned piano faculty and students from around the globe at the Illinois Summer Piano Institute. Featuring: Daily Masterclasses (open to the public!), Student Gala Concerts and evening Faculty Recitals presenting works from Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Schumann, Lutosławski, Ben-Haim, Ravel, Debussy – and more! On Saturday, July 29, this incredible week concludes with Aviram Reichert in a performance of George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F and winners of the Student Concerto Competition with Sinfonia da Camera!

Early Bird Registration Ends June 1!

The Summer Piano Institute, hosted by Sinfonia da Camera at the University of Illinois, offers advanced study for serious pianists, including graduate, undergraduate, and a limited number of highly qualified pre-college musicians prepared for artist-level study. Participants benefit from individual lessons with world-renowned faculty, daily master classes, performance opportunities, access to Steinway grand pianos, and recitals by both faculty and students. New this year, Artist Director Ian Hobson will present a lecture on the piano etudes of Frédéric Chopin as well as an interactive chamber music masterclass featuring principal musicians of Sinfonia da Camera.

This truly unique and elite institute also features a concerto competition, available to all participants, with an opportunity to perform with Sinfonia da Camera, the resident professional orchestra of Krannert Center for the Performing Arts!

On behalf of our Artistic Director Dr. Ian Hobson, we are delighted to share that the University of Illinois Summer Piano Institute will be taking place this year from July 24-30, 2022.

This year's five world-renowned faculty members. Artistic Director Dr. Ian Hobson is joined by Dr. Timothy Ehlen, Professor Boaz Sharon, Professor HieYon Choi and Professor Antonio Pompa-Baldi.

Please come from near and far to join a rigorous program of daily individual lessons, attendance at daily master classes, practice on all Steinway pianos, as well as performance and recital opportunities throughout the week.

For 2022, we welcome advanced pianists ages 14-17 to apply for the pre-college division. These students will participate in the same lessons, master classes and participant recitals as our adults. Pre-college registration also includes housing, meals and counselor supervision. Students younger than 14 may be considered. If interested for a younger student, please inquire for additional information.

All students are welcome to participate in the concerto competition for a performance with Sinfonia da Camera, the resident professional orchestra of Krannert Center at University of Illinois. Participation is not required for everyone in SPI.

On behalf of our Artistic Director Dr. Ian Hobson and all those involved with the University of Illinois Summer Piano Institute, we are very sorry to report that the 2020 Summer Piano Institute has been cancelled. The University has made this decision for all summer programs this year for the safety of our attendees, faculty and staff due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope to see you next year and will continue to let you know of the exciting events the future holds!

Applications Now Being Accepted!

Planned and started by our artistic director Dr. Ian Hobson, the Summer Piano Institute at the University of Illinois offers advanced study for young pianists. Participants will benefit from individual lessons with each SPI faculty member, attendance at daily master classes, and access to newly renovated practice rooms all equipped with Steinway grand pianos. Included with the program are performance opportunities and admission to faculty recitals. This year’s faculty is:
• Dr. Ian Hobson, Artistic Director and Swanlund Professor Emeritus
• Prof. Timothy Ehlen, University of Illinois
• Prof. Boaz Sharon, Boston University
• Prof. David Deveau, MIT

For 2019, we are pleased to continue the concerto competition available to all participants for the opportunity to compete for a performance with Sinfonia da Camera, the resident professional orchestra of Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, University of Illinois.

Qualifications: Participants must be at least 18 years old on the first day of the program. There is no upper age limit. Younger students may be considered on a limited basis. Admission for all students is on a rolling basis. We are excited to give more students the opportunity to enter this year’s concerto competition! Accepted repertoire now includes 1 movement (need not be the first) of all Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Saint-Saens, Liszt, Chopin, Grieg, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, MacDowell, Ravel and Moszkowski piano concerti. Some other one movement works of shorter length such as Strauss Burleske, Rachmaninov Paganini Variations, and Weber Konzertstuck are also accepted. If you are interested in another work, they may be possibilities and can be approved on an individual basis. Please feel free to get in touch with any questions.
