This photo offers a small glimpse into the many ways the Native American House (NAH) engaged with Native scholars attending the 2026 Native Forward Empowering Scholars Summit at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.

Throughout the Summit, NAH staff, students, alumni, and community partners helped create opportunities for learning, connection, and kinship-making. Contributions included our presentation, "Cultural Centers as Home-Places: Indigenous Student Affairs Standpoints," featuring NAH staff and 2025–2026 NAH Ambassadors; "Native-Made Desserts at the NAH," which featured homemade treats by Fox Way Catering, a Native woman operated catering business from Chicago; Jamie Singson (NAH Advisory Circle Chair) sharing "The Story of Wassaja: The First Native Alumnus of the University of Illinois"; current Native students and alumni leading a campus highlights tour that introduced scholars to the people, places, and programs that support Native student success at Illinois; and the Empowering Scholars Summit Collaborative Zine, a session co-led by the University Library where scholars created zine pages responding to the question, "What does an empowered scholar look like?"

We are grateful to Native Forward Scholars Fund for the opportunity to learn alongside and host such an inspiring group of Native scholars, staff, and leaders.

The Native American House at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign recently hosted its 2026 Congratulatory Ceremony, marking a profound and beautiful milestone for Native graduates. Rooted in traditional honoring practices, this ceremony carries immense significance by celebrating academic excellence while visibly strengthening the Indigenous presence across academic disciplines. The one-of-a-kind ceremony brought together relatives, distinguished guests, and tribal community members to honor our scholars on the traditional homelands of the Peoria, Kaskaskia, Wea, Miami, Mascoutin, Odawa, Sauk, Mesquaki, Kickapoo, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, and Chickasaw Nations. 🌱 Herbal Health + Community Care Recap 🌱

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our Finals Relief Program! The Native American House was filled with warmth, community, and the comforting aroma of traditional remedies.

In collaboration with the Trickster Cultural Center in Schaumburg, Illinois, the Native American House invited students to engage in hands-on herbal medicine making. Led by NAH Ambassador Ashlee Shoemaker (Diné), it was an incredibly engaging afternoon. Participants made herbal cough drops, shared Navajo Tea, and learned how traditional practices support balance, healing, and everyday health.

A special and heartfelt thank you to Melissa Shoemaker from the Trickster Cultural Center for coming to campus and supporting our NAH Student Ambassador during her presentation. We are also thrilled that everyone could leave with take-home materials and recipes to continue these practices!

We are so grateful for our community partners and the students who make these programs so meaningful 🧡💙
