MEET THE SOLOIST: Marissa Simmons

🌙 This Halloween, contralto Marissa Simmons joins Sinfonia for Spellbound: Spanish Sorcery, bringing her distinctive artistry to two evocative works exploring passion, mystery, and the supernatural.

Originally from Chicago, Simmons has performed with distinguished companies including Lyric Opera of Chicago, Virginia Opera, and Des Moines Metro Opera. She has been praised for her “rawly sensual, wry, whiskey-toned voice” (San Francisco Classical Voice) and her “theatrical magnetism” (South Florida Classical Review).

In Bizet’s iconic “Habanera” from Carmen, Marissa brings to life one of opera’s most compelling characters through music brimming with confidence, intrigue, and irresistible allure. In de Falla’s El amor brujo, her voice becomes part of a haunting musical world shaped by Spanish folklore, ritual, and otherworldly atmosphere.

Jonathan Keeble is known for his rich tone, effervescent personality, and nuanced musicality. Professor of Flute at the University of Illinois, Principal Flute of Sinfonia da Camera, and a member of the award-winning Prairie Winds and Aletheia Duo, Keeble has performed with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and in chamber recitals with Yo-Yo Ma, Renée Fleming, and Luciano Pavarotti.

Led by music director Ian Hobson, Sinfonia da Camera opens their season at Krannert Center with a program celebrating the virtuosic brilliance and expressive depth of the Classical era.

C.P.E. Bach’s Flute Concerto in D Minor, performed by Jonathan Keeble, exemplifies the empfindsamer Stil with its expressive contrasts and improvisatory character. Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 15, led from the keyboard by Ian Hobson, offers a masterful balance of virtuosity and structural refinement.

The evening culminates in Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, a work of striking dramatic intensity and rhythmic urgency. Rare among Mozart’s symphonies for its minor key, it reveals a depth of emotional complexity that continues to resonate with modern audiences. Together, these works illuminate a period of extraordinary artistic innovation, where formal precision and expressive freedom coexist in perfect balance.
