Ophelia’s Jump Productions’ current offering is Joshua Harmon’s play “Bad Jews”. It is another of their masterful productions — extremely well directed, skillfully acted, and brought to life on a set that is well designed, presented and dressed. The lighting effectively reinforces what is taking place and the sound includes music that nicely augments the atmosphere being created. I was highly impressed by the quality of the production and I will be returning on closing night to enjoy it all one more time.
I offer kudos to the following for their excellent contributions to the production: Artistic Director Beatrice Ojp, Director Nicki Heskin, Stage Manager Darya Harris, Technical Director/Lighting Designer/Sound Engineer Ray Jones, Scenic Designer/Set Designer/Scenic Painter Beatrice Casagran, Set Construction Frank Dickson, Mark MacKenzie, Ray Jones, and Beatrice Casagran, and Graphic Design Max Herzfeld & Beatrice Casagran.
Director Heskin and her talented cast of Max Herzfeld (Jonah), Vanessa Lauren Gamble (Daphna), Miles Cooper (Liam), and Ashlee Dutson (Melody) have obviously put in much work analyzing their characters and the complex interrelationships among them and the ways that playwright Harmon has revealed clues about them in the crafting of his play. They are an interesting group of people who are set in their ways, ready to attack those who disagree with them or, perhaps even worse, fail to render them support that they believe is due to them. And, in fundamental ways, each one believes that they are in the right and anyone who fails to accept them is wrong. Interesting tensions come to exist as the individuals come to question the rightness of things they have previously adhered to so staunchly. This cast sustained an impressively high level of intensity along with rapid fire pacing and excellent timing throughout the performance with little letup or relief being provided by the script.
If I had a special theatrical award to bestow, it would go to Miles Cooper’s Liam for Excessive and Overwhelming Verbal Pummeling of Another Human Being by Reckless and Unrelenting Utterance of the Word “NOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!” I likely understated my depiction of it by underrepresenting the impact of the weapon in its actual use.
I recommend this play to those who appreciate mature theatre for adults. It is interestingly written and being extremely well produced and performed. The website of Ophelia’s Jump Productions proclaims that they offer “Theatre that feeds the mind, invites discovery, and sparks conversation.” Their current production of “Bad Jews” supports their claim quite well.
There are three performances remaining in the current run: Friday December 14th at 8pm, and Saturday December 15th at 3pm and 8pm. You can check their website (www.opheliasjump.org) for information and tickets or call their box office at (909) 734-6565.
Big Easy still on for tonight's dinner choice at OJP??? I can't wait! See you tonight my friends!
Loving the fascinating production of Orphans. Front row, center seats. Reminds me a play you might see the Mark Taper Theater but without the drive to LA. And much more hospitable.
We are fortunate that Ophelia's Jump has made Upland its home.
Here's a tasty morsel you can expect to complement your theater experience from The Big Easy Sandwich
Hey actor friends! slots are filling up for Quilters auditions. Please send us an email (and your resume/headshot if we have not worked with you before) so we can schedule an appointment for you. I would very much like to cast this show as locally as possible, but will have to reach out far and wide if none of the talented actors in this area audition! We will be beginning rehearsals on December 17 and are looking at a schedule of T, W, Th, Sat. Sun. I love this show and am looking forward to working with some strong actors on telling these stories. email:
[email protected] to schedule an audition time on Sunday December 11th.
I was very pleased with the opening night performance of Ophelia's Jump Production's Midsummer Night's Dream in the Sontag Greek Theatre at Pomona College. The efforts and results of Director Dexter Roger's work were very much in evidence throughout the evening as the acting and staging guided the audience to follow and focus on the tale that Shakespeare built his play around -- it was easy for the audience to follow and they showed appreciation.
The actors had been skillfully assisted to work together and highlight key portions of the action and they displayed their characters traits and quirks very well to the receptive audience's delight. I was especially impressed by the standout performances of Tavis Baker (Theseus/Oberon), Loral Barlow-Boyes (Helena), Garrett Botts (Philostrate/Puck), Tucker Boyes (Demetrius), Bryan Brophy (Peter Quince), Pamela Lambert (Starveling), Aaron McGee (Lysander), Austin Mooney (Snout), Chloe Reyes (Hermia), Troy Whiteley (Bottom), and Amanda Zarr (Hipollyta/Titania).
A musical accompaniment was supplied by a group perched on a precariously appearing elevated orchestra "pit". (As intermission was ending a good samaritan in the audience sounded a warning that some members were close to falling over the edge and it was heeded with minor adjustments of seating positions.) The music contributed to the atmosphere of the performance and the percussion was used to provide accentuation to the performance.
Before the play the audience was treated to a fine performance by Jim Cope, who sang a program of traditional folk music from what I related to the Appalachian region of the U.S. and some related songs from more recent performers and song writers. He accompanied himself on acoustic guitar and mandolin and was appreciatively received by the audience.
It was an excellent opening for Ophelia's Jump Production's third annual Midsummer Shakespeare Festival!
Break Legs tonight! Hope all goes wonderfully.
Great script! Great cast! Your audience is in for a treat! Our production in Rochester NY was a real hit. I know yours will be, as well.
Come on. Post a photo of Queen in the Blue dress.
