🍂 GEORGIA HOMEOWNERS: IT’S TIME TO ADJUST YOUR MOWING! 🌱

As we head into fall, our warm-season lawns — Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede and St. Augustine — are beginning to slow down and prepare for winter dormancy.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners can make this time of year is continuing to mow exactly like they did during the middle of summer.

✂️ Papa Turf’s Fall Mowing Tips:

✅ Consider raising your mowing height slightly as growth begins to slow. A small increase can leave more leaf surface available as the turf heads toward dormancy.

✅ Never remove more than ⅓ of the grass blade at one mowing. Scalping warm-season turf late in the year can leave damage visible well into spring.

✅ Start mowing less frequently. As temperatures cool, your lawn simply isn’t growing as fast. Mow according to growth — not because it’s been seven days.

✅ Keep those mower blades SHARP! Dull blades tear the grass instead of cutting it cleanly, leaving brown, ragged tips and adding unnecessary stress.

✅ Don’t quit mowing too early. Georgia can still have plenty of warm weather during the fall. Continue light mowing as needed until active growth stops.

🍁 Remember: The goal going into fall isn’t to force more growth — it’s to help your turf enter dormancy healthy and prepared for winter.

A little attention now can make a BIG difference when your lawn starts waking back up next spring! 💪🌱

🍂 WHY IS MY LAWN TURNING BROWN?

Late summer in Georgia can be brutal on turf. After months of heat, humidity, inconsistent rainfall, and mowing stress, even Bermuda, Zoysia, and Centipede lawns can start showing signs of stress.

But brown grass doesn’t always mean your lawn needs more water.

At Papa Turf, these are some of the biggest things we look for:

💧 Watering habits – Deep, less-frequent watering encourages deeper roots. Short watering every day can actually create shallow-rooted turf that struggles during dry periods.

🌱 Compacted Georgia clay – Hard, compacted soil can prevent water, oxygen, and nutrients from reaching the root zone. Core aeration can make a big difference.

🍄 Disease pressure – Hot days, warm nights, heavy dew, and humidity create ideal conditions for turf diseases. Adding more water to a disease problem can sometimes make it worse.

🐛 Insects – Grubs, chinch bugs, and other turf-damaging insects can create brown areas that look very similar to drought stress.

🚜 Mowing stress – Dull blades, mowing too short, or removing too much of the grass blade at once can turn a healthy lawn brown quickly.

🧪 Soil & nutrition – More fertilizer isn’t always the answer. Soil pH and nutrient availability matter, and pushing too much nitrogen into already-stressed turf can create additional problems.

The biggest takeaway: Diagnose the problem before treating it.

Two brown lawns sitting side-by-side can have completely different problems—and require completely different treatments.

That’s where professional turf management makes the difference. At Papa Turf, our goal isn’t simply to spray or fertilize your lawn. It’s to understand what the turf needs throughout the season and build a program that helps it stay healthy through Georgia’s toughest conditions.

Why hasn’t your lawn fully greened up yet? 🌱

A few warm afternoons don’t always mean your turf is ready to explode with growth. Warm-season grasses like Bermuda and Zoysia pay more attention to what’s happening in the soil than the air temperature.

Here’s what could still be slowing things down:

🌡️ Soil temperatures may still be lagging behind, especially after cooler nights.

💧 Moisture levels play a huge role in spring recovery and overall turf activity.

🌾 Different grass types wake up at different times — some varieties naturally take longer to transition out of dormancy.

✂️ Proper mowing, watering, and nutrient timing all help encourage a smoother green-up process.

The good news? Consistent warmer weather is coming, and healthy turf will respond when conditions are right. Patience now leads to stronger lawns later. ☀️

Need help getting your lawn ready for peak season? Papa Turf has you covered.

Officials are urging residents to keep their eyes out for an invasive hornet species that is trying to make Georgia its home.

The yellow-legged hornet was first spotted by a Georgia beekeeper in 2023. Since then, the Georgia Department of Agriculture has been trying to aggressively track and trap the pest.

Officials say eliminating the nests while they are in the first stage of development is critical.

The insect builds egg-shaped paper nests above the ground, often in trees, and can host up to 6,000 worker hornets.

Officials say the hornet is a threat to Georgia's honeybees and other pollinators, which could seriously damage the state's agriculture industry if they continue to spread.

🚨 Georgia Drought Alert – What This Means for Your Lawn 🚨

A newly released drought map (valid April 7, 2026) shows much of Georgia in Moderate to Exceptional Drought (D1–D4) — including right here in our area.

🌱 Important for Warm-Season Lawns (Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede):
These dry conditions will delay green-up coming out of dormancy. Even with warm temps, your grass may stay brown longer because it doesn’t have the moisture it needs to fully wake up and grow.

👉 Don’t panic — this is expected in drought conditions.

🌱 What this means for your yard:
• Slower spring green-up
• Thin or patchy areas hanging on longer
• Increased w**d pressure while turf is weak
• Higher stress on your lawn overall

💧 What you should be doing right now:
• Water deeply 1–2x per week (early morning) if allowed
• Avoid scalping your lawn too early
• Be patient with green-up — don’t rush it
• Stay on a proper w**d control program

👨‍🌾 How Papa Turf can help:
We’re adjusting applications and timing to match these conditions so your lawn transitions as smoothly as possible into the growing season.

If your lawn isn’t greening up yet, it may not be a problem — it may just be the drought.
